Scoring Basis “Variance”
▸ Variance – is a measure of how far a set of numbers is spread out. It is one of several
descriptors of a probability distribution, describing how far the numbers lie from the expected
value.
▸ Calculating Variance & variance % age.
• Variance (Effort) = Variance of Effort
𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝐸𝑓𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑡 −𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑑 𝐸𝑓𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑡
•= { }
𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑑 𝐸𝑓𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑡
• Variance % = % age Variance
𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝐸𝑓𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑡 −𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑑 𝐸𝑓𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑡
• =[ ∗ 100]
𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑑 𝐸𝑓𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑡

Scoring Basis “Variance” - RAG Status
▸ RAG Status of Commonly known as Traffic Light Reporting is by far a accepted
reporting for Projects.
▸ Basic Notion of Status
• R – RED – Variance is more than x > 20 %

• A – AMBER – Variance is between 10 % < x < 20 %

• G – GREEN – Variance is between 0 < x < 10 %

Scoring Basis “Variance” – Timelines
▸ Timelines. Also Captured as Delivery Accuracy
• The Timelines as a parameter will be assessed by the "Number of Elapsed Days" between Project Start
and Project End (RFI & Closure) this can be assessed from the MPP plan at the start of the Project and the
last deliverable Project
• The Project Plan has to be Base-lined as the first agreed Plan with the Customer, Number of Elapsed Days
will be taken as planned.
• Actual Timelines will be calculated from the Plan which is Currently running and tracked.

Scoring Basis “Variance” – Scope
▸ Scope
• Scope is the Deliverables that have been defined at the time of Proposal and Contract signed in
the form of SOW.
• Scope can be defined by any of the following means.
‣ Overall Deliverables as per SOW
‣ Features & Functionalities to be delivered
‣ Use cases to be delivered etc.
• Calculating Variance : The variance can be calculated on the basis of above points as the base
else we can use the following formula to assess the variance
‣ ∆𝑆𝑐𝑜𝑝𝑒 = ∆ 𝐸𝑓𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑠
‣ Once the Delta Efforts is calculated it has to be divided by total efforts to define the variance % age

Scoring Basis “Variance” – Efforts
▸ Efforts
• Efforts are base-lined at the time of Proposal in the sales phase
• The effort variance calculation is as follows
𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝐸𝑓𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑡 −𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑑 𝐸𝑓𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑡
•{ }
𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑑 𝐸𝑓𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑡

Scoring Basis “Variance” – Financials
▸ Budget or P&L
• This is the Sum total of all Expenses that have been defined at the start of the Project and
includes the following but not limited to
‣ Efforts
‣ Travel
‣ Onsite Presence Days
‣ Other agreed expenditures Viz., Location booking, Connectivity ownership etc.

▸ Variance Calculation
• Planned Financials Vs Actual Financials

Scoring Basis “Variance” – Resource
▸ Resource
• Defines both the qualitative or quantitative aspects of Resourcing.
• The RAG status has to be assessment will be Subjective, but in some cases it clearly impacts
other factors of Project Delivery and the status determination is objective.
• “IC/BAC unavailable for the project impacting over all timelines by 15%” – This is a clear case where
resourcing RAG status will be Amber
• “IC/BAC Assigned expecting more 10 % more time for completion” – This is a subjective matter and
has to be assessed Case by Case and in concurrence to the Resource Manager / Bid Manager
for clarity.

Scoring Basis “Variance” – Quality
▸ Quality
• Quality assessment will include
‣ Process’s
‣ Documentation
That have to be adhered to a delivery.

▸ Defining RAG Status

• R – RED – Variance is more than x > 20 %

• A – AMBER – Variance is between 10 % < x < 20 %

• G – GREEN – Variance is between 0 < x < 10 %
