7 DANGER SIGNS OF PREGNANCY

1. VAGINAL BLEEDING
● Should report even slight spotting since serious bleeding complications start from
slight spotting.
2. PERSISTENT VOMITING
● Once or twice daily vomiting is not uncommon during the first trimester.
● Persistent vomiting is not normal
● Vomiting till 12 th weeks= extended vomiting
● Persistent/extended vomiting depletes the nutritional supply available to the fetus
and is a danger to pregnancy
3. CHILLS AND FEVER
● Indicate an intrauterine infection, a serious complication for both the mother ad
the fetus.
● Also a sign for gastroenteritis.
4. SUDDEN ESCAPE OF CLEAR FLUID FROM THE VAGINA
● Membranes may have ruptured, and this may be a 1st sign of labor or it
threatened the mother and the fetus because the uterine cavity is no longer
sealed against infection
● Sudden escape of fluid is crucial so a safe and controlled birth can be planned
5. ABDOMINAL OR CHEST PAIN
● Signal that something is wrong, needs to be reported immediately.
● The uterus expands painlessly
● A sign of other problem like tubal/ectopic pregnancy, separation of the placenta,
preterm labor or something unrelated to pregnancy that are serious like
appendicitis, ulcer or pancreatitis.
● Chest pain may indicate pulmonary embolus, a complication that may follow
thrombophlebitis
6. PREGNANCY-INDUCED HYPERTENSION (PIH)
● Refers to a potentially severe and even fatal elevation of blood pressure during
pregnancy.
● Symptoms:
✔ Rapid weight gain ( over 2 lb /week in the 2nd trimester, 1 lb/week in the
3rg trimester)
✔ Swelling of the face of fingers
✔ Flashes of light or dots before the eyes
✔ Dimness or blurring of vision
✔ Severe, continuous headache
✔ Decreased urine output
❖ If the pregnant woman had these symptoms just this pregnancy it
means to say she needs to see her obstetrician.
