Introductory Message
This Self -Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step by step as
- -

you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre test are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This
-

will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module, or if you need to ask
your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson.
At the end of each module, you need to answer the post test to self check your
- -

learning. Answer keys are provided each activity and test. We trust that you will be
honest in using these. In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the
Teachers are also provided to the facilitators and parents for strategies and
reminders on how they can best help you on your home based learning.
-

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this
SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. Read the
instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficult in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.
What I Need to Know
Hello! Do you know that caring for the young trees means removing the grass
and weeds around them so they do not compete in getting the nutrients from the
soil. In this module, you will perform the systematic and scientific ways of caring
the orchard trees and seedlings such as watering, cultivating, preparing and
applying organic fertilizers.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

Perform systematic and scientific ways of caring the orchard trees and
seedlings using different kinds of preparation.TLEAG-0e-6

What I Know

Before we start our lesson, may I know what you learned about health benefits
from fruit bearing trees by answering some practices.

A. Put a check (/) on practices which you have experienced doing and( X )
mark on those you have not experienced doing.
Practices / X
Planted trees
Harvested fruits
Sold fruits
Eat fruits everyday

Lesson Elements to be observed in Planting
5 Trees and Fruit-bearing Trees

What’s In

In our environment, there are so many orchard trees/seedlings that grow everywhere.

Trees and fruit-bearing trees are very important to human just like us. They

provide us shade, fruits, fresh air, good ambience, income, vitamins and minerals. They serve as
appetizers, desserts and aids in digestion. Can you help me find the scientific ways of caring orchard
trees/seedling? Can you name them?

What’s New

How are you coping with our lesson? I hope you are now ready with our discussion.

Activity 1: Where do I belong?

In this activity, you will sing a song “ I Am a Tree”

I Am a tree ( 2x) With a dark green crown

And a thick strong trunk, above the ground.

I give you food, I give you fruits,

I give you medicines, I give you wood

I need some sunlight, and some fresh air..

I need some water, and your loving care 2x

2
Then the learner will answer the following questions.

1. What is the story all about?

2. What kind of a crown did the tree has?

3. What are the benefits that the tree gives to human being?
4. Did you think that a tree needs sunlight and fresh air? Yes or No

5 If Yes,state your answer___________________________________________.

Activity 2:

Analyze the puzzle and try to find the systematic and scientific ways of caring
orchard trees/ trees. Encircle the words in vertical or horizontal forms.( There are 5
possible answers.)

What is It
To ensure the growth of the seedlings, it is important to follow a systematic process
of caring for the orchard trees/seedling.

1. Watering- seedling needs water to keep them healthy. Keep the soil moist by
watering the seedlings in the early morning or late afternoon.
During the dry season, it is advisable to water the seedlings once in the

3
Morning and once in the late afternoon .Because of the fast evaporation of water
due to hot weather, the soil dries easily so it’s necessary to water the seedlings
enough to keep the soil moist.

Ways of Watering Plants

1. Natural- This is nature’s way of providing water for plants through the rain.

2. Manual- This is with the use of a water pail and dipper or water sprinkle.

3. Artificial-Water supply is artificially produced from a deep-well, dams, and river

with the help of motors.

Methods of Artificial
a. Surface or furrow irrigation
b. Sprinkle
c. Drip or trickle irrigation
d. Sub- irrigation

4
2.. Cultivating- This is the process of tilling or loosening the soil around the
seedlings. This allows for easy absorption of water and fertilizers in the roots of the
seedlings for faster growth. When cultivating, be sure
to remove stems, gravel and other foreign materials in the surrounding
the plant. The soil should be pulverized and refined for easy penetration of water and
fertilizer.

Two Ways of Cultivating

1. Off-barring- refers to cultivating the soil in rows.

2. Hilling-up– refers to cultivating the soil towards the base of the plant. When
cultivation is done properly, the growth of weeds can be controlled. Soil texture will
improve plant growth and distractive microorganisms found in the soil will eventually
die.

3. Applying Fertilizers- Fertilizer is any substance added to the soil that promotes
the healthy growth of plants. Fertilizers contain the nutrient that plants and trees
need to grow. Fertilizers are enriching materials used on land to increase its
productivity.

They are classified into two types:

1. Inorganic – artificial fertilizer made from chemicals (liquid, soluble and

granular form)

2. Organic - natural fertilizer from decayed matter, animals, and other natural
sources.

5
.

Fertilizer Advantages Disadvantages

Inorganic -Odorless and handy -Made of chemicals
-Always available in the -Hazardous to animals
market -Expensive
-Fast production -Makes the soil unfertile
(dependent to it)

Organic - Natural - Foul odor

- Easy to produce - It takes time to
- Promote the prepare
growth of
beneficial
organism
- Adds more
nutrients to the
soil
- Very high in
production

6
Examples of organic fertilizer

a. Humus – comes from decayed matters from plants and animals

mixed with soil.

b. Manure- comes from animals waste such as livestock( big animals)

and poultry ( chicken) waste.

c. Green Manure – comes from decayed plants.

d. Compost - comes from decomposed biodegradable waste in a pit.

e. Compost Pit- composting by digging pit underground.

f. Basket Compost- composting home garbage in container.

g. Compost Heap- a compost pile.

h.Vermin Compost- comes from the waste of vermin ( earthworm).

i. Liquid Fertilizer- made from the juice of plants and vermin compost through the
process of concoction.

4. Preparing- beds at 1m wide by convenient length.

Broadcast pre- germinated seeds in thoroughly puddled and leveled soil. Construct
drainage canals for proper water removal.

Add organic manure (decompose) and a small amount of inorganic fertilizer as

basal dressing.

7
Remember:
It is important to keep it well away from the trunks as collar roots may develop.
Mulches also increase soil organic matter, improve soil structure, increase water
retention and help reduce fluctuations in root temperature. Apply herbicides to the
border of the mulched area and to individual weeds that grow through the mulch.

What’s More

Directions. Read the situation carefully. Choose the best answer and write your
answer on your paper.

1. Select __________ that come from fruit-bearing trees with good form, free from
bruises and diseases and insect bites.
A. seed B. soil C. water D. plant

2. ________ the sown seeds thoroughly. It is important to keep the soil moist to
speed up the germination process.
A. plant B. water C. seeds D. bags

3. Place ____________ in a partially shaded area.

A. pots or bag B. seed C. cover D. seedbed

4. Apply _______ to avoid infestation.

A. fungicide B. water C. mixture D. seeds

5. A fertilizer that comes from decayed matters from plants and animals mixed
with soil.
A. manure B. humus C. Green manure D. compost
