Module Summary Information

1 Module Title Data Visualisation
2 Module Credits 20
3 Module Level 7
4 Module Code CMP7227

5 Module Overview

The aim of this module is to identify, apply and design data visualisations. The module provides you
with the fundamental principles and practice-based activities needed to design data visualisations for
both different contexts, and different types of data. More advanced visualisation concepts and tools for
analysing multi-dimensional data and large data sets will also be examined and appraised. You will
learn how to employ visualisation as a tool that can help users understand large and/or complex data
sets and convey the outputs to a diverse audience. Finally, upon completing the module, you should
be able to critically approach the design and implemention of data visualisation solutions.

Learning and Teaching

This module will utilise a hands-on approach to teaching, including online tutor supported activity-
based learning. This is disseminated in the following manner; individual reading and preparation for
knowledge and learning, for further assessment preparation. Individual and group learning activities,
research tasks and activities and knowledge check activities, as directed by the learning material.

There will be a number of practical activities and tutor led sessions in order to facilitate this module
fully. Practical workshops, instructional videos, sandbox play activities and tutor facilitated practical will
be used. The teaching sessions will include individual/team based experiential activities such as
critique of example scenarios; these scenarios will include situations tailored to make a point as well
as real world case studies. Essentially, lectures will be largely interactive. Students will also apply the
lessons learnt on problem scenarios by employing suitable software tools.

The module provides the opportunity for formative assessment and feedback. The opportunity for
formative assessment is included within the assessment brief along with specific dates for submission.
This module is very practical and students will be expected to complete all exercises in the order that
they are presented. This approach will enable students to build their knowledge and skills.
