«Theatre» is Somerset Maugham's most famous novel. This is a story about
the beautiful and talented actress Julia Lambert, who shone on stage, but was
unhappy in her marriage. At the time of the beginning of the novel Julia Lambert
achieved everything that she could only dream of. She is rich, she had a reliable
husband, loyal fans and beautiful son. Her talent is appreciated. But Julia wanted to
be loved.
When she met her future husband Michael Gosselyn she fell in love with his
beauty. But over time, all his negative qualities outweighed the positive ones. He
was cowardly, lacking in initiative and absolutely not talented person. Julia
Lambert became disillusioned with her husband, although he later became a good
companion for her.
Julia needed love and therefore immediately fell in love with the young clerk
Tom Fennell. For her, Tom became like a fresh breath of air, she was inspired by
him and as a result received from Tom all that she so lacked in her marriage to
Michael.
However, this connection with Tom led nowhere. Tom became interested
in the young actress, which made Julia very sad. But Julia found the strength to
get out of this situation with dignity.This love affair with a young clerk taught Julia
a lot. Julia's strong feelings for the young man had a positive effect on her acting
in the theater. Julia said that it is impossible to play those feelings on stage that
you do not experience in real life.
Julia's life gradually turns into a theatre. So Julia's sincerity and friendliness
are slowly turning into «star fever». But talent allows all this to be hidden and
controlled. Julia's whole life is a game: in front of the audience, friends, family,
herself.
This novel by Somerset Maugham can be considered philosophical.
Somerset Maugham is very sensitive to the female nature. He delicately conveys
all the experiences of the main character. And although this novel was written
several years ago, all the problems that are discussed in this novel are relevant in
the modern world.
