Sustainability Model
Some of the ways they contribute include:
● Employment and careers: Directly and

indirectly they employ over 79,000+ people.

● Contributions to governments:They

contributed INR 324 billion to their host

governments through direct and indirect taxes

and royalties.

● Social investments: They have invested US$

17.63 million in community development

initiatives and improved 3.26 million lives.


● Nand Ghar - Nand Ghar is committed towards
eradicating child malnutrition, providing education,
healthcare and empowering women with skill
development. It supports more than 17,000 children
and more than 15,000 women.

● Healthcare - Aids to make available primary health


care facilities and special emphasis on programs
regarding HIV/AIDS awareness.

● Drinking Water & Sanitation - Under this efforts


have been made to provide drinking water and
sanitation facilities available to people at ease.

● Women's Empowerment - In this attempts were


made to empower women, give them employment
opportunities, make them independent and help them
get started with them micro level business.
Interesting Facts
● About 94% of their waste has
been recycled in the year
2019-20.
● Their contribution to Greenhouse
Gas has reduced by about 16%.
● They managed to conserve 1.4
million GJ of energy.
● In addition to this they have
conserved about 2.3 million cubic
meters of water.
MINING PROCEDURE
● Their most of the mines are now being opened or
operated with international ESIA standards
(Environmental and Social impact assessment).

● When the mines are closed, they follow rehabilitating


process called TMF (Tailings management facility).

● They use the mind closing fund to rehabilitate the are


with forest or human settlements.

● They grow pastures at these places to produce


fodder for domesticated animals.
Health & Safety
● 44 of their 52 sites are OHSAS 18001 certified.
(Occupational health and safety assessment
series).

● They embedded a zero-harm culture at their


sites.

● All their subsidiaries run robust on-site training


programmes for both employees and contract
workforce (induction and job-based)
appropriate to the site’s operations and
contextual needs based on the linguistic and
literacy skills of local employees and
contractors.
● Safety training is delivered to employees and
contractors on subjects including working at heights,
permit to work, job safety analysis, first aid, incident
reporting, behaviour-based training Fall off Ground
(FOG).

● They conduct occupational health and wellbeing


programmes relevant to the identified risks of each
operation. These include baseline health studies to
identify key occupational health risks and steps to
mitigate those risks, which are audited through their
VSAP tool.

● Medical screening is also provided to identify and


provide medical treatment of illnesses and diseases
relevant to the location, for example HIV (Zambia)
and malaria (India and Zambia).
● They provide first aid and occupational
health training to employees and
contractors along with site-specific
personal protective equipment (PPE)
and protective clothing.

● All their businesses are well equipped


with occupational health centres to
treat illness and injuries in their
workforce. Medical insurance is
provided to 100% of their full-time
employees whereas contract
employees are covered by either
Employee State Insurance (ESI) or
through Group insurance/workmen’s
compensation.
Key Safety Focus Areas

• Work at height – awareness of risks related to working at height and ensuring adherence
to the working at height standards

• Fleet safety – aims at avoiding, reducing and minimising serious accidents associated with fleet
movement.

• Lock out – Tag out (LOTO) – energy (electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic) isolation through a proper
lock out – tag out system

• Machine guarding – management of hazards related to rotating and moving machinery.

• Permit to work – awareness and effective implementation of permit to work system

• Pedestrian management – managing pedestrian safety particularly near fleet and machinery.
Environment
● As part of continual improvement, they planned to
obtain ISO 14001 certification at all sites.

● In accordance with their Sustainability Framework,


they also conduct Environmental and Social Impact
Assessments (ESIA) across all new projects

● They strive for zero environmental incidents and


have a robust internal process, including
categorising incidents according to severity, for
managing any incident that does occur.
Water
● Their approach is outlined in their water policy and
delivered through their water management
standard.

● They facilitate the integration of water


management into decision-making processes for
new and existing projects, which helps ensure all
necessary measures to avoid or minimise and, in
some cases, compensate for the impacts of their
projects are taken.

● Rain water harvesting is undertaken by HZL,SSL –


Jharsuguda and SSL – Copper and Iron ore
divisions. For many years our Iron Ore division
has met its water requirement through harvesting
rain water.

CONCLUSION

● The Vedanta Board is responsible for all aspects of sustainability across the Group and acts through
the Sustainability Committee.

● The Committee oversees and reviews sustainability performance and the Committee Chairman
regularly updates the Board on its progress.

● Incorporates sustainability in decision making process
