Coiled Tubing Stuck-Point Calculation

1. The document provides steps to calculate the stretch (Delta L) of a coiled tubing (CT) string when it becomes stuck in a well. 2. It describes applying increasing tension to the CT to measure the stretch, and using these measurements and CT dimensions to calculate the location of the stuck point. 3. The process involves determining stretch in individual CT sections and identifying the section where the calculated stretch first exceeds the measured stretch.

Worksheet for Nontapered String
CT Stretch:

The following procedure should be used to determine the stretch (Delta L) in the CT string

a) Apply sufficient tension to the tubing to ensure that the string is in tension at the stuck point.
Pull the pipe into tension with at least 500 pounds of the load over the hanging weight of the tubing
in the hole.
b) Make a visible reference mark on the CT just above the stripper.
c) Apply additional tension on the pipe in increments of 1,000 lb ( the total of 10,000 lb if possible is
the best amount ). Never exceed 80% of the string yield tension (CoilLIMIT).
d) Accurately measure the tubing stretch by measuring the distance the mark has moved. Note the
exact additional tension applied.

Tome
nota del exacto monto de tensión aplicada.

1- Determine the actual tubing string stretch for a given load.

Length of CT in the Well = (ft)

Measured Stretch = (in)
Applied Load = (lb)

2- Using the calculation from overleaf, determine the taper section in which the stuck point is locate.
Starting with the top section, calculate the stretch induced in each taper until the difference
is negative or zero.

CT ID : 0 (in)

Taper Section No.1 Length = (ft)

Difference = #DIV/0! (in)
Taper Section No.1 Stretch = #DIV/0! (in)

Section No.2:

CT OD : 0 (in) CT thickness: (in)

CT ID : 0 (in)

Taper Section No.2 Length = (ft)

Difference = #DIV/0! (in)
Taper Section No.2 Stretch = #DIV/0! (in)

Difference = #DIV/0! (in)
Taper Section No.5 Stretch = #DIV/0! (in)

3- Determine the location of the stuck point in the last taper section by applying the following
formula. The value for Delta L (Estiramiento) is obtained by subtracting the sum of the free taper
sections calculated stretch from the measured stretch.

CT OD : 0 (in) CT thickness: 0 (in)

CT ID : 0 (in)

Measured Stretch (Delta L) : 0.00 (in)

Applied Load (F) (at the time the CT stretch was measured at surface) : 0 (lb)

Length to Stuck Point (L): #DIV/0! (ft)

Total Length to Stuck Point = #DIV/0! (ft)
