Test pieces for tensile testing of metallic materials

Prüfung metallischer Werkstoffe – Zugproben

In keeping with current practice in standards published by the International Organization for Standardization
(ISO), a comma has been used throughout as the decimal marker.

Foreword
This standard has been prepared by Technical Committee Prüfverfahren mit zügiger Beanspruchung für
Metalle of the Normenausschuss Materialprüfung (Materials Testing Standards Committee).
DIN EN 10002-1 specifies only general requirements for tensile test pieces. To facilitate their manufacture,
the responsible technical committee thus considered it important to retain the present standard, which gives
Normen-Download-Beuth-Corus Research Development & Technology-KdNr.6203282-LfNr.3400323001-2006-11-06 14:50

more detailed information on the different types and dimensions of test pieces.
The test piece types and dimensions given here satisfy the requirements specified in both DIN EN 10002-1
and ISO 6892.

Amendments
This standard differs from the April 1991 edition in that a further test piece type (H) has been specified.

Previous editions
DIN DVM 125 = DIN 50125: 1940-08, 1951-04, 1986-03, 1991-04.

All dimensions are in millimetres.

1 Scope
This standard specifies the types and dimensions of test pieces that are suitable for use in the tensile testing
of metallic materials as covered in DIN EN 10002-1.
NOTE: Test pieces as specified here comply with the specifications given in DIN EN 10002-1 and are
intended to serve as examples for manufacturing purposes. Use of test pieces which deviate from the
recommendations made here, but which nonetheless fulfil the requirements specified in
DIN EN 10002-1, is also permitted.

deburred. If the rolling skin is not machined off, the test piece thickness, a, is equal to the product thickness.

surfaces, with the exception of the test piece ends.

(non-proportional test pieces).

NOTE 1: Flat test pieces shall usually be taken from strip, sheet, bars and sections, and the edges should be
deburred, but the rolling should not be machined off.
NOTE 2: Manufacturing test pieces by stamping may result in significant changes in the material characteristics,
particularly the yield stress, due to the material being work hardened. Where materials are known to work
harden, test pieces should be prepared by milling or grinding.

5 Marking
Tensile test pieces shall be marked in such a way that, after testing, it is still possible to determine the sample
from which the test pieces were taken and, if required, their location and direction in the sample. The marking
shall be applied on the surface or the side of one end or, if necessary, on the sides of both ends.
