ASSIGNMENT 5
Module 5: The Calling of the Disciples

Instruction: Answer the following questions.

1. Among the 12 disciples of Jesus, which of them would you like to emulate? Who
among them can you relate personally?

Among the 12 disciples of Jesus, Matthew is the one I would like to emulate. One
of the characteristics exemplified in the life of this follower of Jesus was that he was
open-minded and teachable. He was willing to change course to go in a better
direction. Even though Matthew sacrificed everything, including his reputation, he
was not closed-minded or locked into one path of life to gain what he wanted. It
seems he was constantly studying the horizon to find something better. And, when
Jesus came along and called him to follow him, Matthew left everything behind,
including his wealth, for something even more valuable.

Matthew is someone to whom I can relate. Because, like him, I am a teachable

and open-minded individual. Regardless of their perspective, I am open to accept
criticism, advice, and feedback from those around me. I'm also open to new ideas and
opinions, and willing to change course if things don't go exactly well. Like Matthew, I
also dedicate myself to life-long learning. Every day, I like to seek out and learn
something new, and I like to keep my eyes open for something greater.

2. Who is the person you consider your mentor/discipler? The one who has molded you
to be who you are today. State examples of how that person has impacted your life.

I have several mentors in my life, by far the most important mentor is my mom.
For me, a mentor is someone who helps you through your life decisions and
encourages endless learning from their life experiences and wisdom. The only person
who meets my idea of a mentor is my mom. I have known her since birth and she
have always made me feel loved and cared for. She gives me every tool I could
possibly need to succeed through my years of schooling. She has always given me
words of encouragement, been honest when I am in the wrong, and has always pushed
me to reach my potential.

I talked to my mom on a Sunday, which is family day in our home. I got the
opportunity to ask my mom about her views on my essay topic. In my conversation
with my mom, we talked about having a meaningful life. My mom believes that what
it means to have a meaningful life, is that it should not be defined by money or other
people's opinions. But rather it should be defined by your happiness and compassion
for the things you do in your everyday life. She also believes that the most important
thing is that family is there for you to be honest, and to be critical of your decisions in
life.

My mother is a role model who embodied all of the things I aspire to have. Her
excellent mentoring taught me how to believe in myself and be my own person,
which prepared me for the challenges I would face.
