2015 JC2 PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION
MATHEMATICS 8864/01

Unsupported answers from a graphic calculator are allowed unless a question specifically states
otherwise.
Where unsupported answers from a graphic calculator are not allowed in a question, you are
required to present the mathematical steps using mathematical notations and not calculator
commands.
You are reminded of the need for clear presentation in your answers.
At the end of the examination, write down the question number of the questions attempted, model
of calculator used on the spaces provided on the cover page. Tie your cover page on top of the
answer scripts before submission.
The number of marks is given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question or part question.

5 The diagram shows a running track of width of x m surrounding a grass field. The outer
border of the track is fenced up. The grass field is made up of a rectangle ABDC and two
semi-circles of radius 3x m. The area of the grass field is 0.003 km2 and the length of
fencing used is P m.

6 In a junior college, the number of male and female students in each level is summarised in
the table below.

Year 1 240 224
Year 2 276 260
The PE department intends to find out how regularly students exercise during the school
holidays. The department decides to survey a sample of 100 students in the college by
interviewing the first 45 male students and 55 female students that they meet in the canteen.
(ii) State in this context, one advantage and one disadvantage of this procedure. [2]
(iii) Describe how the department might obtain a stratified sample, identifying the strata
and finding the size of the sample taken from each stratum. [2]

7 A shop sells light sticks in packs of 30. The probability that a light stick is faulty is the
same for all light sticks and the mean number of faulty light sticks in a pack is 1.8.
(ii) Find the probability that fewer than 5 packs have at least three light sticks that are
faulty. [2]
(iii) Using a suitable approximation, estimate the probability that more than 10 light sticks
are faulty. [4]
8 A fish farm sells two types of fish (trout and salmon). The masses, in kilograms, of the
fishes have independent normal distributions with means and standard deviations as shown
in the following table.
The probability that the mass of a randomly selected salmon exceeds 3.2 kg is 0.309.
(i) Show that the standard deviation, d, of this distribution is 0.401 kg, correct to 3
significant figures. [3]
(ii) Find the probability that the total mass of 12 randomly chosen trout is within 0.5 kg
of the total mass of 2 randomly chosen salmon. [4]
Trout cost $7.50 per kg, while salmon cost $10 per kg.
(iii) Find the probability that total cost of 2 trout and 3 salmon exceeds $100. [4]

9 100 students went to a cafe to order a free drink each. The numbers of each type of drink
ordered by the male and female students were summarised in the table below.

(ii) Determine whether the events M and J are independent, justifying your answer. [2]
10 During a break, Jacob chooses to play computer games or watch television programmes or
read a book with probabilities of 0.55, 0.4 and 0.05 respectively. If he chooses to play
computer games, the probability of him spending at least one hour is 0.7. If he chooses to
watch television programmes, the probability of him spending less than one hour is 0.5. The
probability of him spending less than one hour reading a book is 0.045.
(i) Show that the probability that he spends less than one hour if he chooses to read a
book is 0.9. [1]
(iii) Given that he spends at least one hour for his break, find the probability that he
chooses to watch television programmes. [3]
(iv) Jacob has a break on each weekday and three breaks are chosen at random. Find the
probability that Jacob spends at least one hour watching television programmes
during two of the breaks. [2]

11 A factory producing popcorn claims that the mean mass of a pack of popcorn is 300 grams.
A random sample of 60 packs of popcorns is weighed and the mass, x grams, of each pack
is recorded. The results are summarised by
x 17805 x x
2
and 5900 .
(i) Find unbiased estimates of the population mean and variance. [2]
(ii) Test, at the 5% level of significance, whether the factory’s claim is valid. [4]
(iii) State, with a reason, whether any assumptions about the population are needed in
order for the test to be valid. [1]
The factory produces a new variety of popcorn. The mass of cheese popcorn is known to
have a normal distribution with standard deviation 15 g. A random sample of 18 packs of
cheese popcorn has mean mass m g. A test, at 10% significance level, shows that there is
sufficient evidence to suggest that the population mean mass of cheese popcorn is less than
350 g. Find the range of possible values of m, giving your answer correct to 2 decimal
places. [4]
12 A gardener exposes his plants to different amount of sunlight. The total number of hours, x,
of sunlight exposure and the plant growth, y cm, for 9 plants of the same species are given
in the following table.
Plant A B C D E F G H I
x 15.0 13.5 17.5 16.0 20.0 15.6 10.2 18.5 22.2
y 6.3 5.6 7.8 2.8 10.0 5.9 4.4 9.4 10.5
(i) Give a sketch of the scatter diagram for the data. [2]
(ii) State the data point that is most likely to be an outlier. [1]
(iii) By removing the outlier, find the product moment correlation coefficient and
comment on its value in the context of the data. [2]
(iv) Based on the revised data set, calculate the equation of the regression line of y on x
and the equation of the regression line of x on y. [2]
(v) Using a suitable regression line, estimate the plant growth for a plant with 18 hours of
sunlight exposure, giving your answer correct to 1 decimal place. Comment on the
reliability of your estimate. [2]
