In this lesson, you will learn how to holy God’s name.

“Now then, give the Israelites the message that I, the Sovereign Lord, have for them: What I am going to do
is not for the sake of you Israelites, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have disgraced in every country
where you have gone. When I demonstrate to the nations the holiness of my great name—the name you disgraced
among them—then they will know that I am the Lord. I, the sovereign Lord, have spoken. I will use you to show the
nations that I am holy.” (Ezekiel 36:22-23)

“We urge you, our friends, to warn the idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. See that
no one pays back wrong for wrong, but at all times make it your aim to do good to one another and to all people. Be
joyful always, pray at all times, be thankful in all circumstances. This is what God wants from you in your life in union
with Christ Jesus.”(1 Thes. 5:14-18)

What do we admire in them? The good we see and admire in them is but a tiny bit of the GOOD that God is.
Our activity may have made you realize the value you give to personalities. How do the attention you give
them compare with the attention you give to our Lord?

ENGAGE/ACTIVITY
“In the Bible, the name refers to the very reality of the person named, expressing the person's role
or status" (CFC 2140). Among all the words of Revelation, there is one which is unique: the revealed name
of God. God confides his name to those who believe in him, he reveals himself to them in his mystery.
Respect for his name is an expression of the respect owed to the mystery of God himself and to the whole
sacred reality it evokes (CCC 2143-2144).
The holiness of God is the inaccessible center of his eternal mystery. What is revealed of it in
creation and history, Scripture calls “glory” the radiance of this majesty. “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of
hosts … All the earth is filled with His glory” (Is. 6:3). “You shall be holy to me; for I the Lord am holy …”
(Lv. 20:26). The sanctification of His name depends on our life and prayer. Moreover, Pope Francis said we
should not forget that, “the ultimate criterion on which our lives will be judged is what we have done for
others.” (Gaudete et Exultate 104)

"We ask God to hallow his name, which by its holiness saves and makes holy all creation... But we ask
that this name of God should be hallowed in us through our actions. For God's name is blessed if
we live well, but is blasphemed when we live wickedly…

When we say “hallowed be thy name,” we ask that it should be hallowed in us, who are in him;
but also in others whom God’s grace still awaits, that we may obey the precept that obliges us to
pray for everyone, even our enemies.” (CCC 2814)

God calls us to share in His “Holy Being” by a life of grace. Through the life of grace, we achieve our
ultimate destiny, God Himself. (CFC 2145)

Christian Witness:
God's name is indeed holy. What makes us holy is when we devout ourselves to the Holy Name of Jesus, not just
in words but also in deeds. In the life of St. John of Capistrano, he was inspired to devote himself to the Holy Name of
Jesus and His Mother. His devotion to God's name helped him to become a great preacher and gained victory in battles
against the enemy.
St. John of Capistrano
St. John was born at Capistrano, Italy in 1385, the son of a former German knight in that city. He
studied law at the University of Perugia and practiced as a lawyer in the courts of Naples. King Ladislas
of Naples appointed him governor of Perugia. During a war with a neighboring town, he was betrayed and
imprisoned. Upon his release, he entered the Franciscan community at Perugia in 1416. He and St. James of the
March were fellow students under St. Bernardine of Siena, who inspired him to institute the devotion to the Holy
Name of Jesus and His Mother. John began his brilliant preaching apostolate with a deacon in 1420. After his
ordination he traveled throughout Italy, Germany, Bohemia, Austria, Hungary, Poland,
and Russia preaching penance and establishing numerous communities of Franciscan renewal. When Mohammed II
was threatening Vienna and Rome, St. John, at the age of seventy, was commissioned by Pope Callistus III to preach
and lead a crusade against the invading Turks. Marching at the head of seventy thousand Christians, he gained
victory in the great battle of Belgrade against the Turks in 1456. Three months later he died at Illok, Hungary.
His feast day is October 23. He is the patron of jurists.
