Name: ______________________Course/Year/Section: BS___________
BIOLOGY 1A Score: _________

Direction: Identify the following concept of communication.

________________1.
LOCAL AREA NETWORKS What is the most commonly used types of network that delivers
networking needs around a single location.
NETWORK TOPOLOGY
________________2. It refers to the physical structure of a network.
SWITCH ETHERNET
________________3. Types of network that requires a switch or hub.
________________4.
EMAIL The type of communication that deals in chats and conversations.
________________5.
BUS Network topology that each network device is connected to a single
network cable.
ETHERNET
________________6. It is associated to wired networks that is commonly used in LAN,
MAN, and WAN networks.
FAST ETHERNET
________________7. This type of network transfers data at an even higher speed of about
1000 Mbps or 1Gbps.
STAR
________________8. The most commonly used network topology that each network
device is individually connected to a centralized hub or switch.
WIDE AREA NETWORKS
________________9. This is a type of network that delivers networking capabilities
between two different geographical locations locally or worldwide.
RING
________________10. Each network device is connected to its neighbor to form a ring

Direction: Answer the following questions.

1. At home, where there are 4 computers, 2 laptops, and a printer. What do you think
will be the best type of network to be use? And why?

The best type of network to be used at home is the Local area network or the LAN
as it delivers networking around a single location only, which is at home. I assume that
many users are living in that home, so technically, the PAN couldn’t be used as it is only
designed for personal use and WAN as this kind of network is designed for a large
geographical area. LAN is perfect for this instance as it serves multiple users — 4
computers, 2 laptops, and a printer. This kind of network is also designed for small areas
only that connects several devices over a distance of 5 km to 10 km only, which I believe
that the house wouldn’t be that big, or might I say that the size is average to large and
won’t be much larger than a school or a hospital. Therefore, the local area network or LAN
best suits the type of network for this instance at home.
2. On your own understanding, how do differentiate between an application to the
software?

Software is a collection of programs that work together with the machine's

hardware to execute it. It is a series of instructions or data that tells the computer how to
perform certain tasks. It encompasses all terms for computer data and may be executable
or not. In addition, the software is not an operating system based unlike how an application
works and it does not need the users’ interaction in functioning. Lastly, it is also used as a
mediator between hardware and the user. Some examples of software are internet browser,
movie player, etc. On the other hand, an application is a package that has specific use to
perform for the users. It's a program that's solely for the needs of the end-user, and although
all applications fall under the category of software, not all software falls under the category
of software. Application is a kind of software that does a particular task depending on the
user’s need — it is an operating system based, unlike the software. It also needs someone
to operate or interact to function and is only used by the end-users. Some examples of
applications are Microsoft word, google chrome, skype, etc. Therefore, the application is
only a type of software that cannot function independently without a user, while the
software is the overall dependent one that does not need end-users to function. Also, all
applications are software, but all software are not applications.

3. As a student, how computers affect your daily life?

As a student, computers affect my daily life in the means of doing everything I

need to do my responsibilities as a student and as someone who does commissions for
extra income. We live in a modern-day, so technologies, especially computers are the basic
need to learn and to do requirements given by my professors. Computers make it easier
for me to finish my tasks as it is like a complete package — a library, teacher, storage,
name it all. I can read while doing my tasks; multitasking is one biggest advantages of
computers for me. I can watch recorded lessons while answering my modules or I can read
the given reading materials while watching the recorded ones. Slowly but steadily,
computers have supplanted pencils and paper as our preferred method of taking notes in
class. It is indeed easier to type than to write, especially researches and other essays that I
need to do for my requirements. Aside from that, easier communication and easier access
to information are provided by computers. I do not need to go to a library and browse
numerous books for some information that I need to find as there are many E-books given
on a computer and I can also search some words with one click of ctrl + F. Computers are
easy and works magically, especially if you are more than aware of its functions and its
shortcuts. Another reason why a computer is vital in school is that it allows for faster
communication, especially this online class amid the COVID-19 pandemic. We are not
allowed to go outside to talk about the project that we need to accomplish, but the computer
serves as a communication device that makes it easier for us to communicate within
different locations. Some students do not have computers to use during online classes and
they are struggling to do their works and responsibilities as students. Computers and other
technologies are different in their functions, even though one can do the same function —
it’s still different and it’s even harder, especially in answering modules. The convenience
of having a computer is almost a privilege because not all students have it — you can do
almost anything by having a computer like searching the internet that gives us loads of
information regarding the topic that we need to learn. However, there are also some
disadvantages to how computers affect my life as a student. Like what I’ve said that it can
do almost everything, by that, there are too many distractions while studying using a
computer as I can easily engage with different activities like watching series or playing
computer games. It sometimes reduces my attention in class and even affects the way how
I learn. Though it’s easy to take notes when using a computer instead of paper and pen,
the information is not getting retained in my head for that long unlike when I write things
down, I can think more of what I’m writing — it reduces my quality of learning and
understanding given points. Therefore, computers have a positive and negative effect on
me as a student, but I believe that it’s different for everyone depending on how they use
computers and how their mindsets work.
