ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The process of accomplishing this business plan was not that easy. In every part of the
paper, the entrepreneurs had to think critically and more efficiently to avoid inaccuracy.
Cooperation was much needed in terms of brainstorming for the good outcome of the
product itself. The entrepreneurs deeply appreciate the help and support of other people.
They finally managed to officially complete the business plan.

First and foremost, amidst all of the corrections, the entrepreneurs would like to avail
themselves of this opportunity to express their gratitude towards Ms. Josellie Opao for
making sure that the entrepreneurs are less likely to be exposed in encountering errors with
the paper. Through her suggestion and recommendations, the paper has been concluded
with the suitable content and details. Furthermore, they would also like to give gratitude to
the entrepreneurs’ family by providing constant support and resources needed for this
project. Lastly, for the Almighty God for giving them the enough strength and capability to
finish the business plan.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Sleepnetic™ is a business partnership that has a specific goal for people, to give them a
soothing rest. The name is a portmanteau of two terms, “sleep” and “magnetic”. With that
being said, the company aims to serve the customers products that would make them soporific
or be “magnetic to sleep”. As the pandemic violently swifts the country, every Filipino’s life is
at risk. The Philippine government advises the citizens to stay-at-home, and to limit their
outdoor activities as much as possible. At this point, almost everything is done at home and
online: work, classes, interviews, meetings, etc. Due to this, people are becoming constantly
stressed and mentally tired of this “new normal”. They sleep late at night to complete their
tasks and as a result, they become sleep-deprived and unhealthier. Some people buy
melatonin pills/sleeping pills to further enhance their sleeping routine. Some drink vitamins to
improve their immune system because they involve themselves in an unhealthy lifestyle.
During these trying times, Sleepnetic™ used the opportunity to introduce a product that would
assist the people to have a great body clock and have a good night sleep. They would like to
introduce its first ever product to the Philippine market, the PillowTalk.

PillowTalk is the solution that everybody is looking for. It is equipped with different
components that would definitely alleviate the stress that the users experience. The business
partners decided to invest a combined Php 3,000,000 as initial capital whereas every member
invested PhP 375,000 equally. The distribution flow of the product would be direct, wherein the
products would come first from the manufacturers, then would be handed to customers.
Sleepnetic™ has two types of stores: physical and virtual, wherein the physical store is located
at KP Tower Building Juan Luna Corner Recto Ave., and the virtual store can be found on e-
commerce websites such as Shopee and Lazada. The brand, Travel Basic, acts as the
company’s direct competitor and the brands: Uratex, Sleepcare, Select as its indirect
competitors. What makes PillowTalk more superior than its competitors in the market is its
added components which makes the product more special and more original. The computed
manufacturing cost per unit which composes of direct material, direct labor, and manufacturing
overhead amounting to PhP 1768.26. The pricing strategy that was used is Cost Plus Pricing
wherein a specific markup is added to the manufacturing cost. The company decided to add a
35.73% markup rate which would amount to a selling price of PhP 2399.99. The company is
expecting a peak season in May, June for it is near the start, and the inauguration of the
school year for some academies and universities, and in December wherein it’s the season of
Christmas and gift giving. The company decided to add a 15 percent discount for November
and a 25 percent discount for December where the 11.11 and 12.12 flash sale events are
bound to happen. They would be expecting a huge influx of customers enthusiastic to
purchase the product.

After gathering enough sales and saving for a new capital in the near future,
Sleepnetic™ would introduce a whole variety of products that have the same function, for
relaxation. They seek to sell them at an affordable price for a better reach of the target market.
The company aims to pursue to expand their products and demography of the target market
even further. They would continue to decide and create innovative ideas and products that
would benefit for the betterment of the health of the people.

I. Introduction

1.1 Background of Product Concept

In this new normal that people are currently experiencing, it seems like everybody is stuck
in an endless loop in his/her activities every day. Citizens are all under quarantine due to the
fear, and to control the spread of the virus. As a result, students are made to attend their
classes online, and some workers participate in the work-from-home normal. Everybody is
adjusting to this new standard, but others find it difficult. In addition, students and workers have
a hard time getting a good night rest/sleep because of the workload they have been receiving.
Some are sleep deprived which can be detrimental for their health. At the beginning, the group
suggested many ideas that would cater their target market but at the end, they chose to focus
on having self-care that customers might need. So as a solution for this never-ending problem,
the group came up with a neck pillow that would help them to get a satisfying slumber.

PillowTalk is a mechanical pad that would massage and rub the neck of the client to trigger
the pineal gland to release more melatonin. Additionally, it also has a mini-speaker which
produces sleep-inducing, subliminal sounds which can be controlled by buttons. The group
hopes that they could expand this product to the market and they could achieve our vision and
mission as a company.

III. Marketing Aspect

3.1 Customer Analysis

3.1.1

The product falls under behavioral segmentation under the sleep aids sector, since
‘Pillow Talk’ focuses on helping the users to easily fall asleep. Considering pillow talk as
behavioral, it refers to people who are in need of sleeping aids and also focuses on activities
done by the customers as well as its benefits. Pillow talk is also considered as demographic,
since this type of segmentation is also used to divide a market through variables including the
age. As for the product done by the entrepreneurs, the product benefits the needs of a
consumer who experiences stress and difficulty in sleeping.

The market size in Manila with at least 1,600,000 citizens according to World Meter will
include the total number of teen students who are taking online classes, adults who work or
simply people with the age that ranges from 13-60 and lastly, people who take melatonin pills.

3.1.2

Aligning the product with the current situation, the target market of the entrepreneurs
are people who have a difficulty in sleeping and people who experience stress most especially
students attending online classes and adults who work on a daily basis.

3.1.3

The product, ‘Pillow Talk’ has a lot of benefits to its users, especially to those who work
on a regular basis and to people who have a low level of melatonin. Unlike any other ordinary
pillow, this mechanical pad would massage the neck of the users which will eventually help in
releasing melatonin since it triggers the pineal gland, and in this way, the users will not have a
hard time sleeping. This product is also produced as an alternative to melatonin pills which has
a bad side effect on people who are taking it.

3.1 Competitors Analysis

In the market, Pillow Talk has a variety of competitors in the sleeping aids segment.
There are direct competitors like Travel Basic, and indirect competitors such as Uratex, Sleep
Care and Select. These competitors have similar pillow qualities and materials such as
Memory foam and cotton cloth. What makes the Pillow Talk different is that it has two unique
features, the speakers and the massager. The massager massage and rub the neck of the
user to trigger the pineal gland to release more melatonin. Mini speakers are used to produce
sleep-inducing, subliminal sounds and there are various sounds to choose which can be
controlled by buttons. The company itself gives you a 1-month warranty and free returns, any
factory defects and any broken parts are accepted as long as it is valid on the warranty
services. Other competitors are using their own delivery services but it takes a week or a

month to deliver. The company shipping services are partnered with LBC, J&T Express and
JRS, which are the products are only handed over to delivery partners, while the packing of the
products is done at the shipping services at the company. Pillow Talk customer service is
always open for all consumers who have some complaints.

3.3.1 Product/Service

Figure 3. Product’s Illustration

PillowTalk has been designed to serve the purpose of giving a better well-being of the
customer. It comes with a mini-speaker that produces subliminal sounds which can be
controlled by buttons. It comes in 4 different types of colors which are mainly silver, green,
yellow and blue. These colors would help relax the user by their hues. This device also has a
warm massaging roller located at the nape portion to rub the neck to trigger the pineal gland to
release more melatonin and has a relieving cushion for comfort when resting or sleeping.

PillowTalk is lightweight and a portable product. It is easy to use and also has a fast-
charging feature. It contains a rechargeable battery that can be used unlimitedly. While it can
only be charged for a couple of hours, it can last for at least a day of usage.

3.3.2 Place

3.3.2.1

MANUFACTURERS CUSTOMERS

Figure 3. Distribution Channel Flow

The products would be on the manufacturers’ hands first. They would be the one to buy the
needed parts, assemble them, undergo them to quality control, monitor their functions, etc.
After observing the following proper measures, the products are now safe to be shipped/sold to
the customers via physical store or e-commerce virtual store.

3.3.2.2

For the placing of the product in the market, the entrepreneurs chose to have both virtual and
physical. Products being sold both online and in malls will help the entrepreneurs gain and
reach more customers.
Since there is an ongoing pandemic, not everybody is allowed to go to malls, that is why online
markets exist as an alternative to physical stores where customers can also shop and at the
same time be safe in the comfort of their homes.

3.3.3 Promotion

3.3.3.1 Advertising and Promotion

Online Advertising

Pillowtalk is an essential product that would benefit and give comfort to the customers.
The entrepreneurs would form various possible advertising approaches to effectively grasp
and engage a target market, specifically in online platforms. To assess the current situation,
the company would be focusing more on the social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Instagram,
Twitter, etc.). Utilizing online platforms as an advertising strategy will be an effective way to
cater to the target market by providing graphic layouts of PillowTalk. The company would
communicate to another retail store manager to put on a poster on specific stores to gain more
engagement/impressions with customers. Posting graphic layouts on social media would help
the entrepreneurs attract more buyers. In this pandemic, online advertising strategies would be
an effective way to convince that PillowTalk products are the best.

Sales Promotion

PillowTalk promotion will be utilizing social media platforms and online store
applications such as Lazada and Shopee. These platforms are highly encouraged to be used
to initiate sales promotion. The company would be launching deals to attract more buyers such
as (1) Contests and giveaways on social media. This strategy would help the company to gain
more popularity by providing prospective buyers a fun and exciting games in exchange for
giving PillowTalk products, (2) flash sales in a given day, (3) the entrepreneurs would distribute
coupons discounts, (4) Buy 1 get 1 PillowTalk products in a given time. Lastly, (5) the business
will be utilizing holiday deals specials to give discounts to customers who purchase on
holidays.

Direct Marketing

The entrepreneurs will be utilizing the distribution of personalized flyers/brochures by

stating information, facts, and benefits of the PillowTalk product. At the same time, the
personnel would introduce and give a background and usage of the product. The distribution of
flyers/brochures would be initiated in a certain place where there are a lot of people present
(i.e., malls, condominiums, subdivisions, apartments, etc.). The marketing strategy would be
directed at the target market who finds comfort in their everyday lives by using PillowTalk
products. Introducing this product in a certain place would help the entrepreneurs engage with
the customers and can have a chance of stating them the benefits of using PillowTalk to the
target market.

The social media promotion would cost around 1300 PHP because the
entrepreneurs would take the opportunity of the rapid increase and expeditious
reach of social media to netizens and would likely need to subscribe to online
markets. The print ads would cost around 2000 to 2500 PHP because the
entrepreneurs would hire a graphic designer to create a wonderful poster for
advertisements. Also, the team would be creating bundles of brochures and flyers
for advertisements. These would be distributed to public places such as: malls,
parks, condominiums, apartments, etc. so the product would reach many people.
For the sales promotion, the business partners would uphold contests and
giveaways/ freebies to increase the popularity of the product. Because of that,
these freebies would cost 30000 to 35000 php. These giveaways would be worthy
of the price they would spend buying PillowTalk. Aside from that, the team would
also endorse flash sale / holiday deals for the product so that future customers
would be enthusiastic about the deal and would be eager to buy. Since these two
events would be filled with discounts, freebies, great deals, the estimated budget of
the team would be 30000-35000 PHP

3.3.4 Pricing

The business partners would be using Cost Plus Pricing. This is a pricing
strategy which the selling price is determined by adding a specific markup to a products-
unit cost. It is also an alternative pricing method for value-based pricing. To justify this
pricing method, these young entrepreneurs also need to review the pricing strategy to
defend their price, pinpoint their added values, find their own customers pin points,
evaluate ourselves from online competitors, stand on their ground and use other useful
resources.

IV. Operations Aspect

4.1 Facility Location

4.1.1

The facility area is the place where the creation of the items will be held. The
PillowTalk will need more facilities that are sufficient to cater the space needed for the
creation of items and the spaces for the trucks that will do the delivery of the products
so that is why the company will be leasing a 230 sqm office property worth Php 20,000
that is enough for the space that the partnership needs. The office will be situated at KP
Tower Building Juan Luna Corner Recto Ave., Binondo, Manila (Beside 168 Mall) near
one of the dumpsites in Manila for the waste products to be cleaned easily and the
place is also near the marketplace where there are people who will come every day.
The company would invest to renovate the fixtures of the store to make it more modern
and more appealing to people. Utilities such as water, electricity, internet, and more can
be easily obtained in the place where PillowTalk will be made and the real property tax
rate in Manila is 2%, 1% higher than in province area but the company can shoulder the
expenses, for the place is located in an urban area and it could attract many people or
interested investors and consumers.

4.1.2

Figure 4. Facility Layout

Figure 5. Interior of the Office

4.2 Operations Requirements

4.2.1 Work Operations

In creating the product there are a lot of things that need to be done, starting with
looking for available materials to be used for the product with the cheapest price in the
market to be followed by buying materials in large quantities to save up a bit of capital.
The estimated days in producing a single unit would be 45 min-1 hour, and as for the
target number of productions, it would be at least 900-1000 products a month. The
entrepreneurs must also find a place wherein the target market is seen so that the
products will be easily sold.

There are several factors that may affect the time frame of the production, including the
shortage of material stocks to be used, simply because it is impossible for
manufacturers to produce a product without the necessary parts needed for production.
Late shipping of materials is also a hindrance in production. In business, there are a lot
of problems that entrepreneurs least expect, and to deal with such problems
entrepreneurs must be ready to face it, that is why choosing the right team in business
will eventually help in dealing with future business struggles and in finding the right
solutions.

Cast the advertising and promotion each month so business partners can monitor the
growing amount of their money and sustainability of the product.

4.2.1.2

For quality control measures, the entrepreneurs will be setting quality standards
for the product and deciding which quality standards they must focus on, to be followed
by reviewing the results and getting feedback about the product to make possible
improvements. After making multiple copies of the product and after the product testing
and checking, it is all set for distribution to physical stores and online stores handlers.

After gathering ideas, the entrepreneurs have decided to get suppliers that are
easy to contact. Some of them are near the entrepreneur’s location, and some are
available for online transactions. In that way, amidst the pandemic that is going around,
they can manage to build the product itself. The entrepreneurs inquired about the
availability of stocks, if it can cater the needs, and most importantly, the quality. Upon
inquiring, the entrepreneurs and suppliers have come to an agreement that both parties
should obey each other’s terms and conditions despite the challenges that they are
going to face. If one does not comply with the given conditions, the contract may be
terminated. The entrepreneurs will prepare an alternative list of suppliers in case. They
will contact them when it is needed. After discussing, the entrepreneurs have checked
the breakdown of the costing if it is flexible enough. The estimated breakdown would be:
