1. “The computer system did it” is an easy excuse for a multitude of problems.
Clearly WellPoint’s system consolidation effort went poorly, but is it fair to say that this incident raises other more fundamental areas of concern about the management of WellPoint?
If the management of the company of WellPoint is managed properly,
encountering those problems arose at early stage will immediately planned for solution and be then resolved. If these problems are taken care of as soon as possible before another problem arises, then they can avoid the reason “The computer system did it” which is not really qualified to be as a reason as the owner of the organization. Errors and problems such as these should be already anticipated before the system is implemented.
2. What can be done to improve the quality of information technology projects at
healthcare organizations? Should such system efforts be classified as safety- critical systems and be subjected to more rigorous implementation standards and processes? Should there be oversight of such efforts by either the government or some industry organization?
In order to improve the quality of information technology projects at healthcare
organizations, problems especially major ones or likes should be anticipated beforehand (Risk Management Team Roles and Responsibilities). Since it involves healthcare, it is not just a mere organization that should be left unattended when issues rise With such nature of business, it should be a must that the systems that they are implementing and will be implementing will undergo strict quality tests accompanied by supervision from those who are expert to the field
3. Implementation of electronic healthcare records is a national priority, and
much emphasis is being placed on the importance of adopting new information technology. Meanwhile, the fundamental processing systems are falling into disrepair. How should healthcare organizations such as WellPoint prioritize their scarce resources?
Prevention is better than cure.
To do so, manufacturers/developers must undergo numbers of quality test of the
system first before deploying it, software engineers think critically and be accurate on the systems expected needs and functions and make sure these are appropriate. As for WellPoint, gathering and analyzing of requirements data should be strictly systematically followed especially on the early stages. They should have list on what are the needs of customers and possible customers. WellPoint should also look into their fundamental processing systems and make it a point that those systems deliver their work properly. They should maintain the said systems and check it regularly in order to prevent future system problems.
