Lesson 8: Using the Keyboard

The keyboard is an input devices that we use for typing letters,


numbers and other characters.

Parts of the Keyboard

These are the parts of a keyboard.

The keys are arranged in groups according to their functions:

1. The control keys are used for the operating system of the

computer.

2. The function keys have special tasks, for example F1 is for Help.

3. The alphanumeric keys are used to enter letters and numbers.

4. The navigation keys are used to move up, down, left or right on

the screen.

5. The numeric keypad is used to type numbers easily.

6. The indicator lights are turned on when the toggle keys are used.

An example of a toggle key is the Caps lock.

Position of Hands on the Keyboard

When using the keyboard, our 4 fingers on each hand are placed
on the home keys.
These keys are called home keys because we will always place our
fingers on these keys and return to them when tying. This is the same
as our home-when we go to places, will begin from and return to our
home.
The home keys are all in one row.

Let us try the


home keys.

1. Open Microsoft
Word.
a. Select
Start.
b. Select All programs.
c. Open Microsoft Office.
d. Select Microsoft Word.
2. Place our fingers on the home keys.
3. Type the following:
a. asdfjkl;
b. ;lkjfdsa

Each finger is assigned to specific keys.

Let us remember that our:

1. Left pointing finger is used for 4, 5, F, G, R, T, V and B keys.


2. Right pointing finger is used for 6, Y, U, H, J, N, and M keys.
3. Left middle finger is used for 3, E, D, and C keys.
4. Right middle finger is used for 8, K, I, and , keys.
5. Left ring finger is used for 2 W, S, and X. keys.
6. Right ring finger is used for 9, O, L and . keys.
7. Left pinky finger is used for 1, Q, A, and Z keys.
8. Right pinky finger is used for 0, P, : and / keys.
9. Thumb is used for Space bar.
