Topic: Company Production Systems: A cructh for Industrial Engineering?

http://www.essaywriters.net/sys/index.php?rate=14&doc=guide&page=order-structure-and-
definitions - topic

Here is the angle to develop from:

-Company Production Systems: A crutch for Industrial

Engineering?
-Companies spend lots of money on production system programs(5S , Value Stream Mapping
,Kanban,Standarization) , most times , when production processes have already been
implemented and investment already made. Then companies pay lots of money for the production
system , modifying processes afterwards and not even to mention money already lost during
production.
-Foundations of these programs overlap by atleast 85% to these activities that should be done by
the Industrial Engineer. Thereby by being proactive during process planning than reactive.

-Stream lining, error elimination, 5 S etc should be implemented at birth of a process by

Industrial Engineers, since these foundations are in a Industrial Engineers’job description, rather
than organizastions having to turn to these production systems 5,10, 15 years down the line,
because the foundations of the processes were not laid properly by the IE’s in the first place and
had this been the case , the demand for one of these systems would probably be nonexistant.

-It was said by Joseph Moses Juran and William Edwards Deming that the only way to get
quality is to plan for quality. You cannot build quility into a product. In other words , ensure
efficient planning goes into your process, becauses if all irregularities and errors are eliminated
in your processes , you do not waste money on inspectors and scrap.

-If we equip our Industrial Engineers correctly from tertiary and in practical training ,we can
ensure that our processes are right from the start and in doing this we are implementing what
Deming and Juran said all along which is plan for quality.

-Atleast 85% of these foundations of these production systems , like 5S, Standarization, Value
Stream Mapping is identical to the foundations of Industrial Engineering. This effectively sheds
light on all theses companies that embark on these production systems , that we might as well
have called it Indutrial Engineering. As it stands , we did not do this properly and are too scared
to admit that we did not do this properly and now we choose to call them “packages” or even Six
Sigma.

-An Industrail Engineer plans the process , defines the planned process and then implements.
Surely 5 S should form part of that, because all the value adding tools should be included in the
process planning by the IE. Also with implementation of the process and during training you
must make sure that everybody is doing the job exactly the same way, which is Standarization.

-The handover of the process does not happen when the process is finished. It should happen 90
days after the start of production of the process and the reason for that is that once the process is
in place, there night always be some tuning that is needed to cut out the difference between plan
and practical to optimize the process which ultimately is the job of the industrial engineer.

-All the fancy terms that are being spoken about in production systems like 5S standarization,
Value Stream Mapping are new words for what should have already been done in Industrial
Engineering. If we are utilizing all these programs and realizing all the advantages being achieved
by all thses programs, we need to question how good our Industrial Engineering is, in other
words our process planning and process optimization as an engineering activity because if that is
done properly we would not need these programs.

-We have to admit that in a South African industry , that if we don’t use these programs currently
, companies would battle to survive , because they would simply not be competitive. The point
has to be made , that right now, thses programs are necessary for survival.

-Looking towards the future, it should be done as Deming and Duran said, Plan for Quality,
which is done by engineering the quality into the process.

-At the beginning of a new project, are these programs necessary? Or ist it a crutch to fix the lack
of proper Industrial Engineering.

-The question begs to be answered on whether the solution to this controversial statement lies in
the lack of or poor implementation of Industrial Engineering foundations in the process planning
area or does the problem lie at the core, within our tertiary institutions In the sense that the
qualifying Engineers are not equiped with the correct knowledge after they have graduated.
(details on subjects offered at South African Tertiary institutions should be available at their
websites, www.nmmu.ac.za is 1)

-When an Industrial Engineer qualifies from a tertiary institution, has he been granted the
necessary and applicable knowledge that he/she needs to become truly effective from the start
when he/she walks into industry?
