PLASTIC POLLUTION IN THE
MEDITERRANEAN
ΕVERY SUMMER…..
PLASTIC REEFS IN THE WE CAN NO LONGER MAKE
AEGEAN SEA SANDCASTLES
BUT CASTLES OUT OF PLASTIC!
WE NO LONGER
SWIM IN CRYSTAL
CLEAR WATERS
BUT IN PLASTIC-
FILLED WATERS
WHAT IS PLASTIC?

Plastic is chemical products ,coming

from oil.
Nature doesn’t recognize them and
doesn’t know how to degrade them.
WHICH YEAR DID PLASTIC
POLLUTION BEGIN?
The first plastic was produced in
1907, but global plastic
production didn’t start until
the1950’s igniting the beginning
of
PLASTIC POLLUTION.
IN THE PAST 10 YEARS WE HAVE
MADE MORE PLASTIC THAN THE
WHOLE OF THE LAST…..

100 years…
WHAT HAPPENS TO EVERY
PIECE OF PLASTIC EVER MADE?

It remains on the planet.

HOW MUCH PLASTIC LEAKS INTO
THE MEDITERRANEAN EVERY YEAR?

220,000 tonnes
WHICH COUNTRIES POLLUTE THE MEDITERRANEAN
SEA THE MOST?
By 2050 there will be more plastic than
fish in the Mediterranean…
WHICH ANIMALS ARE AFFECTED
BY PLASTIC POLLUTION?

ALL ANIMALS
Sea turtles, whales, dolphins, fish, birds
PLASTICS FOUND IN LOGGERHEADS
SEA TURTLES' DIGESTIVE SYSTEMS IN
THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA
ONE IN EVERY TWO SEA TURTLES
HAVE INGESTED PLASTIC…
SEA TURTLES
CANNOT TELL THE
DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN JELLY FISH
AND PLASTIC
BAGS…
THE PLASTIC YOU
USE KILLS OUR
SEAS FOREVER
DOES PLASTIC AFFECT
HUMAN HEALTH?

YES, IT DEFINITELY DOES.

PLASTIC HAS
BECOME A PART
OF OUR DIET
MICRO PLASTICS:
SO SMALL, YET SO DANGEROUS…
They make 94% of the waste thrown into the
Mediterranean
50% of them comes from the dust given off when
TYRES wear down.
Microfibres lost from clothes while washing make
up 30% of them
Micro-beads in cosmetics account for 12%
Our daily activities,
such as driving and washing our clothes
contribute to the pollution choking our
seas
THE MOST
DANGEROUS
SPECIES IN THE
MEDITERRANEAN
IS
PLASTIC!
WHAT SHOULD BE DONE?
 All countries around the Mediterranean should:
 promote recycling
 forbid single-use plastics such as bags and bottles
 decrease the use of micro-plastic in washing liquids or cosmetics by
2023
 The plastics industry should develop recyclable and compostable
products made out of renewable raw materials, not chemicals
derived from oil.
 Individualstoo have their role to play, making personal choices
such as to use combs or kitchen utensils made of wood, not plastic.
