A computer is a machine that can instruct to carry

out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations

automatically via computer programming. Modern
computers have the ability to follow generalised
sets of operations, called programs.

Characteristics of Computer system:

 Speed
A computer works with much higher speed and
accuracy compared to humans while performing
mathematical calculations. Computer can
process millions (1,000,000) of instructions per
second. The time taken by computers for their
operations is microseconds and nanoseconds.

 Accuracy
Computers perform calculations with 100%
accuracy. Errors may occur due to data
inconsistency or inaccuracy.

 Diligence
A computer can perform millions of tasks or
calculations with the same consistency and
accuracy.

 Versatility
Versatility refers to the capability of a
computer to perform different kinds of works
with same accuracy and efficiency.

 Reliability
A computer is reliable as it gives consistent
result for similar set of data i.e., if we give
same set of input any number of times.
 Memory
It stores input data, instructions and processed
information inside the computer.

APPLICATION AREAS:

 Education
Computer helped them improve the quality of
their academic research and of their written
work. One revolution in education is the advent
of distance learning.

 Healthcare
Computer technology is radically changing the
tools of medicine. All medical information can
now be digitized. Software is now able to
computer the risk of a disease.

 Business
Business clearly sees the interest as a way to
enhance productivity and competitiveness. Some
areas of business that are undergoing rapid
changes are sales and marketing, retailing,
banking, stock trading, etc.

WORKING OF COMPUTER

 IPO cycle
IPO stands for Input, Process and Output. When
you work on your PC you give input to the PC with
help of keyboard or any input device. The CPU
then processes it and gives you your desired
output.

 CPU, ALU, CU
A central processing unit, also called a
central processor or main processor, is the
electronic circuitry within a computer that
executes instructions that make up a computer
program. ALU stands for- Arithmetic Logic Unit it
performs all types of arithmetical and logical
operations the users data. CU stands for-
Control unit this unit controls the flow of
information and data between the CPU and other
parts of the computer.

 SOFTWARE
Software is a set of instructions, data or
programs used to operate computers and
execute specific tasks. Opposite of hardware,
which describes the physical aspects of a
computer, software is a generic term used to
refer to application, scripts and programs that
run on a device.
