Let’s Remember
Hi! I know that you learned about whole numbers in the previous grade.
Let’s find out if you still remember them.

Sets
NOTE: Braces {} is used to show a set and is separated with comma (,).
Each object is called element. Elements are denoted by ∈.
Example:
Set A= { set of whole number¿1¿8 }.
We can write it as, Set A={ 1 , 2, 3 , 4 ,5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , }. We can say that 8 ∈ A or it
can be read as “8 is an element of A.
Example:
Let Set A= { 3 , 5 ,7 ,9 , 11 , 13 ,15 }. Then, { 3 , 5 } is a subset of Set A, we can write
it as { 3 , 5 } ⊂ A.
The universal set is the set that contains all objects under
consideration. It can be denoted as ( ∪ ). It is called union of
sets.
Example:
Let Set A={ 1 , 2, 3 , 4 } and Set B={ 5 , 7 }, then A ∪ B={ 1 , 2, 3 , 4 ,5 , 7 }. It contains
all elements found in Set A and B.
The null set is an empty set. The null set is a subset of any
set.
Example:
Set A= {}.It means there is no element in Set A.
In this section, you will learn some of the notations and symbols
3
pertaining to sets.
1. Uppercase letters will be used to name sets and lowercase letters
will be used to refer to any element of a set.
For example, let H be the set of all objects on page 1 that cover or
protect the head. We write H = {ladies hat, baseball cap, hard hat}
This is the listing or roster method of naming the elements of a set.
Another way of writing the elements of a set is with the use of a
descriptor.
This is the rule method. For example, H = {x| x covers and protects
the head}. This is read as “the set H contains the element x such
that x covers and protects the head.”
The following are terms that you must remember from this point on.
A
B
2. Let A and B be sets. The intersection of the sets A and B, denoted
by A ∩B, is the set containing those elements that belong to both A
and B.
4
only if x belongs to A and x belongs to B. This tells us that A ∩ B = {
x ǀ x ∈ A∧x ∈ B }.
Using the Venn diagram, the set A B consists of the shared regions of
A and B.
BA
Example:
Given sets A and B. Set A are the group of students who play the guitar.
While, Set B are the group of students who play the piano.
Set A Set B
Students who play Students who play
the guitar the piano
Solutions:
1. Since we are about to find the union of Set A and Set B, it simply
means that those students who play the guitar or students who play
the piano.
Thus, A ∪ B= {Ethan Molina, Chris Clemente, Angela Dominguez,
Mayumi Torres, Joanna Cruz, Janis Reyes, Chris Clemente, Nathan
Santos}
