Set: An Introduction

I. Introduction:

Good day learners, before we begin the lesson let us all ask the
guidance of Almighty God and let us enlighten our mind to completely
understand the lesson today.

II. MELC (with code):

Illustrates well-defined sets, subsets, universal sets, null set,

cardinality of sets, union and intersection of sets and the different of two
sets.

Let’s Remember
Hi! I know that you learned about whole numbers in the previous grade.
Let’s find out if you still remember them.

Activity 1:
Direction: Identify and encircle all the whole number below.

5 1 1
3
4
0.25 1.6
Questions:

1. Did you identify all the whole number? If so, Congratulations!

Let’s Connect

Activity 2:
Below are some objects. Group them as you see fit and label each group.

Guided Questions:

1. How many groups are there?

2. Does each object belong to a group?

3. Is there an object that belongs to more than one group? Which one?

Sets

IMPORTANT TERMS TO REMEMBER:

Set – is a well-defined object, called elements that share a

common characteristic.

NOTE: Braces {} is used to show a set and is separated with comma (,).
Each object is called element. Elements are denoted by ∈.
Example:
Set A= { set of whole number¿1¿8 }.
We can write it as, Set A={ 1 , 2, 3 , 4 ,5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , }. We can say that 8 ∈ A or it
can be read as “8 is an element of A.

The set F is a subset of a set A if all elements of F are also

elements of A. It can be denoted as (⊂).

Example:
Let Set A= { 3 , 5 ,7 ,9 , 11 , 13 ,15 }. Then, { 3 , 5 } is a subset of Set A, we can write
it as { 3 , 5 } ⊂ A.

The universal set is the set that contains all objects under
consideration. It can be denoted as ( ∪ ). It is called union of
sets.

Example:
Let Set A={ 1 , 2, 3 , 4 } and Set B={ 5 , 7 }, then A ∪ B={ 1 , 2, 3 , 4 ,5 , 7 }. It contains
all elements found in Set A and B.

The null set  is an empty set. The null set is a subset of any
set.

Example:
Set A= {}.It means there is no element in Set A.

The cardinality of a set A is the number of elements contained in A.

Notations and Symbols

In this section, you will learn some of the notations and symbols

3
pertaining to sets.
1. Uppercase letters will be used to name sets and lowercase letters
will be used to refer to any element of a set.

For example, let H be the set of all objects on page 1 that cover or
protect the head. We write H = {ladies hat, baseball cap, hard hat}
This is the listing or roster method of naming the elements of a set.
Another way of writing the elements of a set is with the use of a
descriptor.

This is the rule method. For example, H = {x| x covers and protects
the head}. This is read as “the set H contains the element x such
that x covers and protects the head.”

2. The symbol  or {} will be used to refer to an empty set.

3. If F is a subset of A, then we write F ⊆ A. We also say that A contain

the set F and write it as F ⊇ A. If F is a proper subset of A, then we
write F ⊆ A.

4. The cardinality of a set A is written as n(A).

The following are terms that you must remember from this point on.

1. Let A and B be sets. The union of the sets A and B, denoted by A ∪

B, is the set that contains those elements that belong to A, B, or to
both.

An element x belongs to the union of the sets A and B if and only if x

belongs to A or x belongs to B or to both. This tells us that
A ∪B = {x ǀ x ∈ A∨x ∈ B }

Using the Venn diagram, all of the set of A and of B is shaded to

show A ∪ B

A
B
2. Let A and B be sets. The intersection of the sets A and B, denoted
by A ∩B, is the set containing those elements that belong to both A
and B.

An element x belongs to the intersection of the sets A and B if and

4
only if x belongs to A and x belongs to B. This tells us that A ∩ B = {
x ǀ x ∈ A∧x ∈ B }.
Using the Venn diagram, the set A B consists of the shared regions of
A and B.

BA

Example:
Given sets A and B. Set A are the group of students who play the guitar.
While, Set B are the group of students who play the piano.

Set A Set B
Students who play Students who play
the guitar the piano

Ethan Molina Mayumi Torres

Chris Clemente Janis Reyes
Angela Dominguez Chris Clemente
Mayumi Torres Ethan Molina
Joanna Cruz Nathan Santos

Determine the following operations.

1. A ∪ B
2. A ∩ B

Solutions:
1. Since we are about to find the union of Set A and Set B, it simply
means that those students who play the guitar or students who play
the piano.
Thus, A ∪ B= {Ethan Molina, Chris Clemente, Angela Dominguez,
Mayumi Torres, Joanna Cruz, Janis Reyes, Chris Clemente, Nathan
Santos}

2. Since we are to find the intersection of Set A and Set B, it simply

means that those students who play the guitar and students who
play the piano.
Thus, A ∩ B= {Ethan Molina, Chris Clemente, Mayumi Torres, Chris
Clemente}

Let’s Do This
Let’s test your understanding regarding sets. This time, kindly
answer the activities below.

Activity 3. Write the word CORRECT on the space provided if the

statement is correct, otherwise, write NOT CORRECT.

A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}

(1) {2, 3} ⊂ A _________

(2) {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7} ⊆ A  _________
(3) 8 ∈ A  _________
(4) {3, 5, 1, 7} ⊂ A  _________
(5) 1 ∈ A  _________
(6) {1, 2, 3, 4} ⊂ A _________
(7) { } ⊂ A  _________
(8) ∅ ∈ A _________

Let’s Do More
Here are additional items to be answered. This will help you
practice more of your skills. Write your answer on the spaces provided:

Activity 4:
Perform the given operations. Write answers on the space provided.

A = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4} B = {0, 2, 4, 6, 8}  C = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}

1. A ∪ B = _______________

2. A ∪ C = _______________

3. A ∪ B ∩ C = _______________

4. A ∩ B = _______________

5. A ∩ c = _______________

Let’s Summarize

Summary In this lesson, you learned the definition of union and

6
intersection of sets. You also learned how use Venn diagram to represent
the union and the intersection of sets. You also learned how to determine
the elements that belong to the union and intersection of sets.

Activity 5:
Now, let us challenge ourselves. I know you can do it.

Let W = {x | 0 < x < 3},

Y = {x | x > 2}, and
Z = {x | 0 ≤ x ≤ 4}.

Determine
(a) (W ∪ Y) ∩ Z
(b) W ∩ (Y ∪ Z)
