SONG
1:
“Overture”
(“What
Is
This
Wonderful
Light?
/
Well,
Are
We
There
Yet?
/
No
Room”)
[Stage
Left.
Open
at
an
inn.
Sam
is
hovering
over
his
desk.
Near
him
on
the
floor
are
a
few
travelers
who
have
found
their
spots
for
the
night
on
the
floor
of
the
lobby.
Dialogue
over
instrumental
music,
remarking
about
how
busy
the
inn
is
with
the
census.]
SAM:
This
census!
This
crowd!
I
am
exhausted.
I
cannot
keep
up.
I
barely
had
time
to
tend
to
the
animals
in
my
stable
this
morning,
and
I
need
a
bath.
SONG
2:
“No
Time”
SAM:
[Looking
out
door
of
inn,
to
stage
right]
No
end
in
sight
for
this
line
of
travelers
-‐
I
should
have
added
on
to
the
inn,
but
there
was
no
time.
[TRAVELER
enters
from
stage
right,
kvetching,
carrying
a
mat
and
small
bag]
TRAVELER:
Oy
vey!
There
are
still
hundreds
behind
me!
I
even
passed
three
fancy-‐looking
guys
with
camel
trains.
Can
you
believe
it?
Some
people
travel
in
style.
Ach!
Me?
I
schlep
my
bags,
and
my
bunions
are
killing
me.
So,
do
you
have
a
room?
Tell
me
you
have
a
room
-‐
one
with
a
soft
bed
and
a
private
bath.
And
I
want
mints,
mints
for
my
pillow.
Oh,
…
ew…
and
YOU
could
use
a
bath!
You
smell
like
…
a
stable.
Oy
vey!
SAM:
Sorry.
Ah…
all
I
have
left
are
some
spots
on
the
floor
of
the
lobby.
You
are
welcome
to
put
down
your
mat.
Breakfast
is
at
sunrise,
and
there
is
no
late
checkout.
TRAVELER:
Well,
just
my
luck!
I
guess
I
have
no
choice.
I’ll
take
it.
There
isn’t
another
room
available
in
the
whole
city.
[Tosses
down
mat
near
others]
[Fade
to
stage
right.
The
scenery
changes
to
a
black
background.
Travelers
on
the
road
enter,
carrying
their
bags
and
blankets.

and
whine
to
their
parents.
Random
shouts
of
“I
am
hungry!”
“I
am
tired.”
“My
feet
hurt.”
as
music
begins.]
SONG
3:
“Well,
Are
We
There
Yet?”
[Chorus
breaks
up
and
leaves
RUBEN
and
MOMMA
out
front,
center
stage.]
RUBEN:
Momma,
we’ve
been
walking
all
day.
Can
we
please
rest
now?
MOMMA:
Yes,
Ruben,
let’s
find
a
soft
patch
of
grass.
The
stars
will
be
coming
out
soon.
We
spend
the
night
here,
and
tomorrow
we
should
reach
Bethlehem.
[MOMMA
makes
a
place
for
RUBEN
to
rest
and
sits
over
him,
covering
him
up.
The
star
appears
overhead.]
