Message
Constant adverse changes in the environments are alarming the world by hampering
agriculture production and human health. These adverse changes have devastating effects on
plant growth and yield. These rapid changes include extreme temperature, water stress, salinity,
UV radiation, heavy metal toxicity, poor soil and air quality etc reflecting in deterioration of plant
productivity and human health across the country.
To understand the plant and human responses under different abiotic conditions the most
pressing current need of blend research among plant and human scientists is the need of the hour
to explore the genetic basis underlying these mechanisms. Some bottleneck molecular and
physiological challenges present in plants need to be resolved for better plant adaptation under
abiotic conditions.
Advanced breeding and molecular approaches will help to develop climate resilient crops
with better adaptability under drought, salinity and heat. Genome wide association studies,
genomic selection with high throughput phenotyping and other advanced genotyping strategies
are significant in identifying the different genes/traits for crop improvement under climate
change.
In this direction, in the present conference, we are attempting to bring together audience
from both plant science and medical field on a common platform to understand, discuss and
evolve common strategies to mitigate the effects of adverse environments on plant production
and human health.
I hope this conference will act as a platform for the students and scientific faculty to
understand the various impacts or issues of adverse environments on plants production and
human health. Also I hope this platform will help for innovation.

Message
This conference is an important milestone in promoting inter-disciplinary research
between plant and health sciences. Traditionally, these two sciences have been placed at
opposite poles on the assumption that the two life systems operate by different mechanisms.
However, all life systems share nucleic acid as the fundamental control element. Therefore,
understanding the commonality between the plant and human beings is important.
The last century has witnessed the growth of science mainly due to the reductionist
approach. This has spawned technologies like recombinant proteins and biopharmaceuticals.
We have enumerated the life system at the molecular level. Yet, we face the expansion of
diseases particularly the non-communicable type like diabetes and cancer. So far we have
appreciated plants only as a source of food. However, the therapeutic value of plants remains
poorly explored.
In this conference, we are attempting to bring together a diverse audience on a common
platform and promote cross-fertilization of ideas. Both plants and human beings are exposed to
common abiotic factors like radiation, heat, altitude, etc. Comparative study of the adaptive
mechanism is likely to shed light on the strategies to combat the abiotic stress factors.

Preface
We are extremely delighted and privileged to be part of the organizing team for conducting
national web conference on “Impact of environmental factors for plant and human genetics:
th
Mitigation strategies” held on 13 October, 2020, jointly organized by University of Horticultural
Sciences, Bagalkot, College of Horticulture, Kolar and Sri Devaraj Urs Academy of Higher
Education and Research, Kolar, Karnataka, India.
The known fact is, with a strong basic research, it is possible to have good innovations that can make
creations. For healthy nation building, it is our prime responsibility to join hands and grow as
potential innovators.
In recent days, the alarming changes in environmental conditions like temperature, drought,
flooding, salinity, radiation, toxic heavy metals, soil /air quality etc constantly affecting the plant
and human health across the globe. The blend of agriculture/horticulture and human health research
will yield sustainable outcomes which can be benefited to the large populations.
Hence, we believe this joint event is the need of the hour to formulate the strategies to mitigate the
adverse impact of environmental factors. We hope this flagship event will motivate young
researchers and of course experienced faculty members to bring change in higher education and
research strategy.
Inspiration and leadership of honorable Vice-Chancellors, Directors, Registrars and Deans of our
institutions are constantly encouraging this kind of useful conferences and seminars to reach out
larger population.
We wish this web conference entitled “Impact of Environmental Factors for Plant and Human
Genetics: Mitigation Strategies” will be fruitful and contribute the best for the growth of
agriculture/horticulture and human health sciences with add-ons of technology.
