‘’The locks are simply to insure
The Receiver’s privacy because
he needs his concentration.’’

The attendant says, ‘’There is Nothing dangerous here.’’

TheReceiver
‘’The man was wrinkled, and his eyes, though
piercing in their unusual lightness, seemed tired. The
flesh around them was darkened into shadowed
circles.’’

What do these looks make you think about the

Receiver?
TheReceiver
‘’I am not, actually, as old as I look. This job has aged
me. I know I look as if I should be scheduled for
release very soon. But actually I have a good deal of
time left.’’

What do these words suggest about how the

Receiver’s job has affected him?

Why aren’t there novels in Jonas’s home? Why only
reference books?

Why do you think it has taken the Council of Elders

ten years to find another Receiver?

Why is the job of the Receiver needed in the

community?

Why does the job of the Receiver involve pain?

Ch. 11
Memory #1-Snow and
Sledding
‘’Whew. It was exhausting. But you know, even
transmitting that tiny memory to you—I think it
lightened me just a little.’’

How does the Giver feel?

Why does he feel ‘’lightened’’?

What happened to the
snow?
The Giver tells Jonas, ‘’Climate control. Snow
made growing food difficult, limited the
agricultural periods. And unpredictable
weather made transportation almost
impossible at times. It wasn’t a practical
thing, so it became obsolete when we went
to Sameness.’’
Memory #2-Sun
Memory #3-SunBurn
‘’His skin began to sting. Restlessly, he
moved one arm, bending it, and felt a sharp
pain…’’
‘’Ouch...Owwww. It hurt a lot, but I’m glad
you gave it to me. It was interesting. And
now I understand better what it meant, that
there would be pain.’’
TheGiver
‘’Call me The Giver.’’

“[The old man] looked drained, and a little sad…The

man had sat back down in the comfortable
upholstered chair. He moved his shoulders around as
if to ease away the aching sensation. He seemed
terribly weary.’’
Ch. 11 Discussion
Questions
What does the Receiver mean by ‘’Sameness’’?
Why are snow and sunlight not a part of the
Community’s world any more?
Will there be other more painful memories? Of what?
Why is the Receiver the only one who can have these
memories?
If the Receiver is not that old, why does he look so
old and weary?
