THE GIVER BY LOIS

LOWRY LESSON 7
(CHS. 14-16)
„

SLEDDING MEMORY #2

„Lowry writes,‘’Jonas was thrown violently into

the air. He fell with his leg
twisted under him, and could hear the crack of
bone. His face scraped
along jaged edges of ice, and when he came, at
last, to a stop, he lay shocked and still, feeling
nothing at first but fear.’’
AFTERMATH OF THE MEMORY

„When Jonas wakes,‘’his face is wet

with tears.’’ Jonas begs for ‘’relief of
pain, which was ‘’always provided in
his every day life.’’
WHAT I AM WONDERING
AND THINKING…
„ I wonder if Jonas is starting to question
his new assignment even more.
„ However, as readers, you probably suspect that
Jonas is going to try to do something to stop this,
right?
„ We are starting to see Jonas change.
„ First, he was content with Sameness; now he is
not! He is becoming increasingly more upset about the
injustices that the Giver has had to endure all these
years.
JONAS RETURNS HOME

„Lowry writes that Jonas feels ‘’desperately

lonely’’ because he realizes that his parents
have never known pain.
JONAS ASKS GIVER…

„‘’Why do you and I have to hll

these memories?’’
„The Giver replies, ‘’It gives us
wisdom. Without wisdom, I could not
fulfill my function of advising the
Committee of Elders when they
call upon me.’’
HOW HAS THE GIVER HELPED THE
COUNCIL OF ELDERS?
„The Giver provides an example of when the
Committee called on his advice when citizens
wanted to increase the rate of births (the
number of children a family can have).
„ The Giver responds, ‘’And the strongest
memory that came back was hunger. It came
from many generations back. The population
had gotten so big that hunger was
everywhere. Excruciating hunger and
starvation. It was followed by warfare.’’
WHY CAN’T EVERYONE HAVE THE
MEMORIES?
„Jonas questions, ‘’But why can’t
everyone have the memories? I think it
would seem a little easier if the memories
were shared.’’ To this, the Giver agrees.
„He says, “They selected me-and you to lift
the burden from themselves.’’ To which
Jonas responds that it isn’t fair. Jonas
protests, ‘’Let’s change it.’’
SCENE ENDS

„Ominous mood=threatening
or foreshadowing something
evil
GABRIEL

„ GROWING A DOING WELL, EXCEPT FOR FRETFULNESS AT

NIGHT
„ JONAS,WHO CARES FOR GABRIEL AND CLEARLY DOES NOT
WANT HIM TO BE RELEASED, INQUIRES, ‘’MOTHER?
FATHER? WHY DON’T WE PUT GABRIEL’S CRIB IN MY ROOM
TONIGHT?’’
„ ‘’GABRIELSLEPT SOUNDLY FOR THE EARLIEST PART OF
THE NIGHT… THEN, AS THE MIDDLE HOURS OF THE NIGHT
APPROACHED, THE NOISE OF GABE’S RESTLESSNESS WOKE
JONAS.‘’
JONAS GIVES A MEMORY TO GABRIEL

„‘’He was not aware of giving the memory;

but suddenly he realized it was
becoming dimmer…It was still there, but
the sky was less blue, the gentle
motion of the boat slower, the water
of the lake more murky and clouded.’’
MAN VS. SELF CONFLICT

„Internal Conflict
„Should I tell the Giver what I have
done or not?
CHAPTER 14 DISCUSSION
QUESTIONS
„Why do you think Jonas decides not to confess
to the Giver what he has done? What
motivates his decision?
„Why must one twin be released? Why can’t
both twins live?
„ Lowry creates suspense through Jonas’s
internal conflicts in the novel. How do these
conflicts create suspense? How do you think
the author wants you to feel towards
Jonas?
CHAPTER 15

„The Giver is suffering and begging Jonas

to take the pain away.
LOWRY’S WRITING STYLE

„Look at the descriptive details and sensory

language that Lowry includes:
„ ‘’The colors of the carnage were
grotesquely bright: the crimson wetness on
the rough and dusty fabric, the ripped shreds
of grass, startlingly green, in the boy’s yellow
hair.‘’
„ ‘’Horses lying on the ground shrieked,
raised their heads, and stabbed randomly
toward the sky with their hooves.’’
DYSTOPIA
CHAPTER 16-INTERNAL CONFLICT

„‘’Jonas did not want to go back. He didn’t want

the memories, didn’t want the honor, didn’t
want the wisdom, and didn’t want the pain. He
wanted his childhood again, his scraped knees,
and ball games.’’
CHRISTMAS MEMORY

„During this time, Jonas experiences a feeling he

can’t quite describe: love. He says,‘’I liked the
feeling of love. I wish we still had that…I
do understand that it wouldn’t work very well.
And that it’s much better to be organized the
way we are now. I can see it was a
dangerous way to live.’’
CHARACTERIZATION

„Lowry writes that he ‘’glanced

nervously,’’ ‘’whispered,’’ and
‘’hesitated.’’
„Indirect=nervous
JONAS ASKS PARENTS ABOUT LOVE
HOW CAN LOVE BE OBSOLETE?
JONAS LIES TO HIS MOTHER!
JONAS CONFIDES HIS FEELINGS
TO GABRIEL
„Jonas whispers to Gabe,‘’Things could
change, Gabe. Things could be
different… There could be love.’’ And
then the next morning Jonas throws
his pill away!
CHAPTER 16 DISCUSSION
QUESTIONS:

„ Why does Jonas stop taking the pills?

„ Why does the Giver say ‘’Forgive me’’?
„ What does the society lose without grandparents?
What do they gain?
„ What significant events can you add to the plot
