5.2 BMG101: Introduction to Management

1. Module Introduction

Organization needs to be able to respond quickly to the changes so as to stay ahead of the
competition. The task of managers has therefore shifted from a tight supervision and
control of the work processes to that of empowering the individuals and teams to work
together. Today’s managers perform the role of a coach and leader, guiding their ‘people’
towards achieving a common goal.

The module will provide an opportunity for the students to analyse how management
challenges have developed under the different conditions of the recent times.

The module will cover management thought, the main principles of management,
management skills, social responsibility and business ethics.

The module includes the following functions:

 Providing managers with a theoretical framework to understand the complexities of
managing a diverse group of employees;
 Training managers in the art and science of relevant and effective management to
enable them to achieve their organizational goals;
 Enabling managers to be effective leaders by equipping them with practical skills to
effectively lead their employees.

The module aims to build on the students’ existing knowledge of management, by expanding
their knowledge and skills.

Being a manager involves far more than commanding and controlling their employees.
While this legal-rational power is vested in the manager, ‘soft’ skills’ are required to
accomplish the goals of the organization.

The aim of the Module is to equip the students with a firm foundation in management. To
the employers, management skills are a valuable skill that they would look for when they
interview job applicants for diploma and degree level jobs. So, the aim of the Module is to
enable the students to learn how to become a good manager.

2. Module Pre-requisites

No pre-requisite for the module.

3. Module Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module, the students will:

 Learn to be an effective manager, one who is continuously searching for and

implementing new and better ways to perform their managerial functions, including
managing in the digital world.
 Develop a good knowledge and understanding of the dimensions of management.

5. Teaching Methods

A combined approach of lectures and tutorials is employed to ensure that students have a
clear understanding of key concepts. Lectures are structured to introduce and review
important points throughout the course, and the work undertaken in tutorials underscores
and elaborates these areas to improve understanding and maximise retention. Students
are encouraged to answer the review questions for better understanding. The main sources
of teaching materials for the module are the module Study Guide or Recommended
Textbook(s) available electronically or through the library. During teaching sessions,
multimedia projectors, whiteboards, projected slides, handouts and other visual aids will be
used.

6. Recommended Learning Approach

Teaching and learning sessions will follow the lesson plan closely and the respective
chapters from the textbook. Tutorial sessions are designed to help students deal with
questions relating to the various topics covered in the course and staff are available to
tackle queries at the end of each lecture. Students are expected to undertake independent
study to develop a fuller understanding of the subject and are encouraged to read widely
so that they are abreast of current trends in the field.
