Teresita Campbell Lesson Plan [Rough draft] EDMS 453

Algebra 1 (4/14/2021) Time:

Unit # Topic: Solving systems of Equations using Elimination
8.3 Standard: 8.EE.C.8 40 min.
Teaching Model(s): Direct Instruction with Interactive Instruction
Objective: Vocabulary:
 Students will be able to solve a system of two equations with two  Linear Combination/Elimination
variables using Elimination (Linear Combination).  Standard Form
 Students will be able to re-write a system of equations from standard  Slope-Intercept Form
form to slope-intercept form and then graph.  Linearly Independent/Dependent
 Students will be able determine if the graph of a system of equations  Consistent and Inconsistent
is linearly independent, linearly dependent, consistent, or Materials:
inconsistent.  Computer/Chromebook
 Students will be able to determine if a system of two equations has 1  Access to Desmos
solution, zero solution, or infinite solutions.
 Paper/Pencil (Optional)
Lesson Discussion Questions:
1. What form is the current equation written in?
2. What do you think Linear Combination means? What are similar words to “combination”?
3. Do you see a common factor of the leading coefficients?
4. What relationship do you see between the two equations? Anything Similar or different?
5. Which variable would you prefer to eliminate?
6. Do these lines have the same slopes or y-intercepts?
7. If these lines are parallel, will there be a solution and if no, why not?
Interactive Instruction:
 (5 min.) Introduction: Students will be given the introduction to the lesson activity, objectives, announcements,
and transition to preparing the warm-up activity. They will get a link to the Desmos Activity.
 (7 min.) Warm-up: To access prior knowledge, student will need to match cards to a GCF. Students will review
Unit 8.2 and match graphs to their correct description. (Ex. Consistent/Inconsistent, Independent/Dependent).

Direct Instruction:
 (25 min.) Students will be introduced to solving systems of linear equations using the Elimination Method. They
will be refreshed on previous vocabulary and introduced to new vocabulary. Students will be shown multiple
examples and will be asked discussion questions throughout the lesson.
 (3 min.) Closure: Students will be allowed to ask last minute questions. Reminded about upcoming due dates on
Canvas, then free to go to their next class.

Assessment/Evaluation of Learning: Post-Lesson Reflection:
