Control

Remove the AIR BAG, following the

safety instructions given in Section
55 Electrical System. Then carry out
the operations described below.

REMOVING-REFITTING STEERING BOX

1. Undo the nut securing the steering wheel

to the upper steering column, making sure
to draw a reference mark between the two
to ensure correct reassembly.
2. Disconnect the horn connector and re-
move the steering wheel.
3. Remove the clock spring screws shown.
4. Remove the clock spring connector and
withraw the clock spring from the vehicle.

1. Undo the screws indicated and remove

the steering column bottom shroud from
the vehicle.
2. Undo the screws indicated and remove
the steering column upper sh-Jroud from
the vehicle.
3. Disconnect the ignition switch connec-
tors.
4. Disconnect the connectors of the stalk
unit device, then withdraw the clock
spring device's cable.
5. Undo the screws of the stalk unit device
and remove it from the vehicle.

1. Undo the bolt indicated which secures the

lower steering column to the steering box
pinion.
2. Undo the bolts securing the steering col-
umn mounting to the body shell, then re-
move it.
3. Place the steering column in a vice, then
undo the nut and bolt securing the lower
column to the upper column.
4. Remove the steering wheel height adjust-
ment lever by undoing the nut indicated.
5. Relieve the staking on the upper steering
column bushes.

1 Remove the bushes and the upper steer-

ing column from their mounting.

CHECKING STEERING COLUMN

ASSEMBLY COMPONENTS
2. Check that there is no excessive play be-
tween the rubber bushes and the steering
column, and that the latter is not out of
true.
Also check that the lower steering column
universal joints do not have excessive play
in the spiders. If any fault is detected, re-
place the part concerned.

NOTE Torefit, reverse the procedure for re-

moval.

3. Tighten the steering wheel nutto a torque

of ?? daNm

REMOVING-REFITTING STEERING BOX

Place the vehicle on ramps and undo the

front wheel nuts.
1. Raise the vehicle and remove the power
steering pipe connector located on the
steering box, in order to allow fluid to
emerge and so drain the system.
2. Remove the front wheels. Undo the
balljoint retaining nuts, indicated on the
two sides of the steering box. When refit-
ting, tighten these nuts to a torque of ??
daNm.
3. Fit the tool 1847035000 as shown and re-
move the balljoint pins.
4. Remove the clips securing the two power
steering pipes.
5. Disconnect the Lambda probe's supply
connector.

1. Undo the bolts securing the front exhaust

pipe section to the catalytic converter.
2. Undo the nuts and bolts securing the front
exhaust pipe section to the exhaust mani-
fold.
3. Undo the nuts securing the bracket for
mounting the exhaust pipe front section to
the oil sump, then remove it.
4. Lower the vehicle and remove the hose
connecting the flowmeter to the throttle
body, slackening the clips indicated.
5. Undo the reaction strut nut to facilitate the
withdrawal of the steering box.

1. Remove any residual fluid in the power

s,teering reservoir, using the special sy-
ringe.
2. Undo the power steering pipe connector
located on the steering box.
3. Remove the steering column sound-
proofing panel from the vehicle.
.~ If theengagement lugs break during
~ dismantling, the sound-proofing
panel must be replaced together with
the cup to ensure that the two parts
match properly.

4. Raise the vehicle, undo the nut and with-

draw the reaction strut from the engine
compartment.
5. Undo the bolts securing the steering box
to the steering subframe. When refitting,
'3WOO7FO3 tighten to a torque of ?? daNm.

1. Remove the clip securing the power steer-

ing pipes.
2. Place a hydraulic jack under the car, level
with the gearbox, undo the engine reac-
tion mounting bolts and lower the engine
in order to facilitate withdrawal of the
steering box from the vehicle.
3. Release the reaction struct lever from the
steering box balljoint pin. .
4. Move the steering box outwards from the
right wheelarch as shown in the figure.
5. Withdraw the steering box from the vehi-
cle.

NOTE To refit, reverse the procedure for re-

moval.
