REMOVING - REFITTING
1 Undo the screws (arrowed) and remove
the steering column bottom shroud.

2. Remove the upper shroud from the steer-

FUSE AND RELAY UNIT

The fuse and relay unit houses most of the fuses protecting the system and components of the electrical
system.
Beside the fuses, there are four spare fuses and special tweezers to facilitate their replacement.

Access to the fuses and relays in the unit


~ ~

- Undo the screws (arrowed);


- remove the trim under the dashboard on
the driver's side.

Removing - refitting
- Undo the bolts indicated;
- disconnect the wiring connections located
at the front;
- withdraw the control unit from its seating
and disconnect the wiring connections at
the rear.

Before replacing a fuse, it is necessaryto eliminate the causeof its melting. If the fuse supplies
more than one circuit, its melting could have been causeby a different circuit from that suspect-
ed.
Thefuses must be replaced with others of the samerating; the use of similar material or fuses
whose characteristicsare even slightly different can prejudice their operation and safety in the
car.

FUSES AND RELAYS IN THE ENGINE


COMPARTMENT

General fuses (maxifuse)

1. Radiator fan 30A


2. ABS 60A
3. Radiator fan 30A (with climate control)
4. Ignition switch 50A
5. Injection - Ignition and Fiat CODE 30A
6. Alarm 40A
7. Junction unit 60A

Fuses 2 and 7 are housed inside a container,


to gain access to them remove the cover re-
leasing it from the side clips.

Fuses and relays on bracket against rear


wall of engine compartment

1. Twin relay for i.e. system and electric fuel


pump.
2. Relay for phase transformer.
3. 10A fuse for electric fuel pump.
4. 3A fuse for i.e. control unit.
5. Fuse for engaging air conditioning.
6. Relay for radiator fan 1 st speed.
7. Relay for raditor fan 2nd speed.
8. 10A fuse for ABS.
9. 7.5 A fuse for lambda sensor.
10. 20A fuse for i.e. system.

To gain access to the components listed


above, undo the fixing bolts and remove the
cover

Car interior heater fan relay feeds

The relays are located on a bracket on the


heater unit.

1. Relay for automatically engaging fan first


speed (only for vehicles with air condi-
tioning).
2. Electric fan relay feed.

3 CLUSTER
1. Undo the bolts (arrowed) and remove the
resonator.

~ " 2. Undo the nuts securing the siren (where pre-


sent) and move the siren over to one side.
3. Remove the clip and push aside the cables
connected to the lights cluster top mount-
ing bracket. Disconnect the connector
and remove the screws indicated.
4. Remove the front bumper (refer to Section
'.::
I, 70), undo the bottom attachment bolts
-::::=::=:~ i ,', and withdraw the lights cluster.
5. To access the bulbs, remove the covers by
releasing them from the clips.

- Disconnectthe electricalconnector;
- undo the screws and remove the fog lamp,

ing a screwdriver;
- to replace the bulb, remove only the lens;
- to remove the side repeater withdraw the
bulb holder from the protective sheath and
disconnect the wiring connectors (one per
side) shown in the insert.

REMOVING - REFITTING REAR


SIDE/STOP LIGHTS AND DIRECTION IN-
DICATORS

1. Remove the cover by undoing the knurled


knob.
2. Rotate anti-clockwise the bulb holder for
the direction indicator (1) and/or
side/stop light (2) and withdraw it. Dis-
connect the electrical connector, undo the
nuts and remove the lens in question.

REMOVING - REFITTING REVERSING


LIGHTS AND REAR FOG LIGHTS

NOTE The procedure is the same for both


lights. The reversing light is described
here: the reversing light is the same.

3. Remove the screw securing the lights


cluster then withdraw it, releasing the re-
taining lug.
4. Disconnect the electrical connector and
remove the bulb and bulb holder. When
refitting, first insert the retaining lug (1) in
its respective hole and then secure the
lights cluster.

REMOVING - REFITTING NO. PLATE LIGHTS

1. Undo the screws (arrowed) and remove


the number plate lights from their seating.
2. Separate the lens and disconnect the elec-
trical connections.

3. Remove the courtesy light by releasing it


from the side clips.
4. Disconnect the electrical connectors (only
one connector for cars without alarm sys-
tem).

from the side clips and disconnect the
connector;

REMOVING - REFITTING IGNITION


SWITCH KEY BLOCK

1 Undo the screws indicated and remove


the steering column bottom shroud.

2. Remove the loop antenna of the Fiat


CODE system, releasing it from its top and
bottom clips.

3. Insert the ignition key and switch the igni-


tion on, then press the engagement lug
projecting from the slot (1) and withdraw
the key with the block.

4.5. Remove the retaining ring (1), and


keeping the button (2) pressed, move

the key to PARK. Then withdraw the
barrel with the key from its outer casing.

REMOVING - REFITTING STALK UNIT

The caris fitted with a driver's AIR BAG


as standard. Interventions on the AIR
BA G system must be carried out in
STRICT accordance with the safety in-
structions given in the AIR BAG sys-
tem.

1 Remove the steering wheel bottom


shroud by undoing the screws shown in
the figure.

2. Undo the attachment screws and remove


the steering wheel upper shroud.

3. Undo the three screws level with the


steering wheel spokes, disconnect the

connector and remove the AIR BAG mod-
ule.

4. Disconnect the electrical connector relat-


ing to the horn buttons and remove the
steering wheel.

1 Undo the bolts, lift the clock spring and


lock it in the correct position for subse-
quent refitting, disconnect the electrical
connector and remove the clock spring.

2. Undo the clip securing the stalk unit to the


'.~~ tube of the upper steering column and re-
'" / move the connector cover.
,~ 3. Disconnect all the wiring connections and
withdraw the stalk unit.

4. Remove the steering wheel bottom

Disconnect the flasher from the stalk unit,
pulling it towards the steering wheel.

REMOVING - REFITTING ENGINE RADIA-


TOR COOLING FAN

Cars fitted with air conditionerhavea


double fan; for the removal - refitting
procedure, refer to Section 50, Auxil-
iary units.

Theswitching onl off of the electric fan


is managedby the electronicfuel injec-
tion - ignition control unit on the basis
of the information supplied by the
coolant temperaturesensor located on
the thermostat.

1 Undo the bolts shown and remove the


resonator.

2. Remove the air duct by undoing the clip


securing it to the air cleaner casing and the
bolts shown.

3. If the car is fitted with an alarm system,


undo the nuts securing the anti-theft siren
then place them to one side in the engine
compartment without disconnecting the
wiring connectors.

4. Removethe bracket securing the battery


to its cage, then removethe battery from
the engine compartment.
