The clock spring may come in one of two ver-

sions:

1 If the clock spring lacks lead turrets and

coil, insert both leads in mobile turret (1)
during refitting.

2. If the clock spring lacks fixed turrets and a

tubular sheath, no operations need be car-
ried out on the air bag supply lead.
P3W105l02

From chassisno. N. 15320,the clock

spring will be replacedwith a similar
device which performs the same
function. Thesystemfor preventing
rotation during steering wheel re-
moval is different however.

Main componentsof the new clock spring:

- four fastening points on the steering wheel;

- circular spring (1) positioned in the middle
of the device which prevents the upper ring
from turning.

Refitting clock spring

1 If the clock spring does not require re-

placement, refit after removing the adhe-
sive tape or clip fitted previously, without
turning the upper ring, then tighten the
three retaining screws.

If the upper ring becomes loose during in-

stallation, simply pull up until a click is
heard: the ring will now be locked;

P3W104LO3

2. When fitting a new clock spring, secure to

the stalk unit by means of the three screws
shown in the figure (1) and pull off the
plastic tab which secures the upper ring of
the new device. Check that the ring does
not turn. Otherwise, pull the ring upward
until a click is heard.
P3W106LO1

3. Removeall the red security tape.

If the tape is not removed, or not ful-

ly removed, noise could be generat-
ed by the tape fouling against the
upper part of the stalk unit during
steering wheel rotation.

1. When the clock spring is replaced or fit-

ted, connect the connector of the lead
with a yellow sheath to the clock spring
and check that it is properly attached. In-
sert the yellow lead into the retaining clip
on the rear part of the stalk unit as indicat-
ed in the figure.

Refitting steering wheel

Ensu;e that the wheels are properly

aligned in a straight line.

2. Carefully insert the white two-way air bag

supply connector and lead into the square
slot on the steering wheel hub.

3. Carefully insert the black two-way horn

connector and lead into the square slot on
the steering wheel.

When fitting the steeringwheel,take

care that the clock spring locating
tabs pass through the slot without
forcing.

1 Provisionally position 2 screws as shown

in the figure in order to locate the tapered
housing on the steering wheel so that it
can be fastened correctly.

2. Fit a new steeringwheel retaining nut and

tighten to the specified torque.

3. Use a drift to stake the new nut securing

the steering wheel to the steering column.

4. Fit rubber cover (1) to the retaining nut.

Check that the ridge on the lower face fits
into the smaller hole on the steering wheel
hub and then connect the black two-way
connector to the horn lead;

Pass the horn lead through the clips

around the steering wheel to avoid
fouling.

Safety measures

Operations on air bag system components

must be carried out by specially trained per-
sonnel and the following safety measures
must be STRICTLY adhered to.

During removal and replacement operations,

it is necessary to use polythene gloves and
protective goggles.

Before removing the air bag, disconnect the

battery terminals and wait 10 minutes.

2 Do not use naked flames near the air bag and

air bag system components.

DISENABLING PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG

The Fiat Barchetta is fitted with a device that allows the User to de-active, temporarily and voluntarily,
the passenger side air bag. The control unit also cuts out the passenger side air bag in this case.
The air bag may be disenabled manually by operating a switch by means of the ignition key.
This manual action can be used to cut out passenger air bag operation when the passenger seat is fitted
with an approved baby seat.

SEVEREDANGER:do not place a child seat on the passengerseat when the passengerside air
bag is active (ON position).

Reactivatethe air bag again immediately as soon as the child seat is removed.

Manual passenger air bag disenablement switch

The manual passenger air bag disenablement
switch is located inside the oddment com-
partment on the rear of the central tunnel and
is accessible by raising the relevant flap. The
switch can be set to two positions and is op-
erated by turning with the vehicle ignition
key:
1. Passenger air bag de-activated: (OFF po-
sition) the control unit turns on a "passen-
ger air bag disenabled" warning light (1)
on the instrument panel as shown in the
figure. Children can be carried provided
they are protected by an appropriate re-
straining system on the front seats.
2. Passenger air bag active: (ON position)
panel warning light off: it is absolutely
prohibited to carry children on the front
seat;
Upon start-up (key turned to MAR), the am-
ber "passenger air bag disenabled" warning
P3W112LO1 light comes on for about 4 seconds:
- if the key of the manual passenger air bag
disenablement switch is OFF, the warning
light stays on;
- if the key is ON, the warning light flashes
for a further 4 seconds and then goes off.
~ With the manual passenger air bag dis-
~ enablement switch turned to OFF, the
control unit cuts off operation of the
passengerair bag but allows the pre-
tensioner to work normally. Preten-
sionersdo not constitutea dangerfor
children using proper restrainingsys-
temsand afford satisfactoryprotection
to an adult occupying the passenger
seat when the switch is set to OFFby
