A pet project of top management has been given the green light.

You are assigned the task


of leading a cross-functional team that includes a 20 year veteran to the company, a recent
college graduate and a wage employee. What are the potential obstacles of your team?

With a diverse team there could be many different obstacles. Some of the obstacles that the
cross-functional team would include jealousy between the 20 year veteran and the recent college
graduate. Since the veteran would have more knowledge versus the recent college graduate.
There could be the possibility of resentment from the college graduate in the fact of the veteran
not willing to be open to new ideas given by the college graduate. The wage employee could feel
intimidated working in a group with the college graduate and the 20 year veteran. This would be
from the lack of experience and knowledge due to the lack of working skills. The wage employee
might be afraid to speak up and give his or her ideas to the group. This would cause a problem
because the group would be lacking the ideas from all of them.

to create an environment empowerment. Creating an environment of empowerment is important
because it allows all individuals to feel that they are worthy. Having a healthy environment gives

employees the opportunity to reach new goals and actively participate. “Empowering employees

gives them sense of self-determination, sense of meaning, sense of competence, and the sense of
impact” (London & Mone, 2012). When individuals have the sense of their management team,
encouraging them to strive for bigger goals the outcome will be positive for both the employee

and the company. With each employee having different background knowledge, it is important

Summarize the steps you would take to build trust in leading this team.

Trust is vital in any situation. In order for a team to work efficiently they must be able to trust

one another. “Trust helps develop effective relationships that can lead to greater levels of
performance, collaboration, and empowerment” (London & Mone, 2012). If your teammates
trust each other then they are more capable of working together effectively. “Good leaders help

build control within a work or home environment” (Denton, 2010). In order to gain one’s trust
you have to provide them with propensity to trust you. First, you have to demonstrate that you
have the ability to lead them. You must be able to show them that you are knowledgeable and are

able to guide them in the right direction. Secondly, leaders need to be positive. Giving employees
proper feedback allows the individual to know that you are showing your concern towards them.
Over time the feedback, whether it be positive or negative will show the employee that you care
and it will allow you to be the strong leader that is needed. Finally, all leaders must have the
integrity when coaching others. Showing others that you have not swayed from your morals and

work ethics gives people the confidence that you are loyal and trustworthy. Once you have built
the trust of others, they will feel more confident and will always feel that they could come to you
with questions or concerns.
