Доместикация и форенизация в аудиовизуальном переводе.
Перевод реалий, имен собственных и аллюзий
План
1. Обработка теоретического материала. Выявление стратегий передачи
реалий, имен собственных и аллюзий.
2. Упражнения на перевод реалий, имен собственных и аллюзий.
3. Составление списка реалий, имен собственных и аллюзий,
переданных/непереданных при субтитрировании фильмов.
4. Подготовка субтитров к предложенным отрывкам.
Задания

1. Проработайте источники и дайте ответы на такие вопросы и

задания:
1. Give a definition for cultural references/culturally biased notions. –
Culturally biased, i.e., nationally specific are often elements in a governmental or
election systems of a country and are mostly the titles of address and the ways of
conduct, and, at last but not at least, some articles of clothing/footware.
2. What are the two major strategies for cultural references translation? –
Naturalization and cultural equivalent.
3. What is foreignization? – Foreignization is continuum which is formed
according to the degree of foreignizing qualities of the strategies.
4. What is domestication? – Domestication is continuum which is formed
according to the degree of domesticating qualities of the strategies.
5. Speak on V. Vinogradov’s classification of culture-biased words. –
Vinogradov developed a theory of culturally biased words, which included:
realities related to the way of life of the people, realities related to culture,
customs, and linguistic means, realities related to the state-administrative
structure and social life, onomastic realities.
6. Speak on the types of equivalents for culture-specific vocabulary (listed
by V.N. Komissarov). [11, с. 19] – Komissarov noted that the following types of
occasional equivalents are used in the translation of non-equivalent vocabulary:
equivalents-borrowings, equivalents-tracing paper, equivalents-analogues,
equivalents-lexical substitutions and description.
7. Speak on the ways of rendering the meaning of the nationally biased units
of lexicon (suggested by I.V. Korunets). – There are 6 ways of rendering the
meaning of the nationally biased units of lexicon: 1) by transcription or
transliteration exclusively; 2) by transcription or transliteration and explication of
their genuine nationally specific meaning; 3) by descriptive explaining/explication
only; 4) by translation of componential parts and additional explication of units of
the nationally biased lexicon; 5) by ways of word-for-word or loan translation; 6)
translating by means of semantic analogies;
8. Speak on S. Vlakhov and S. Florin’s realias translation strategies. – Two
strategies for translating realities, according to Vlakhov and Florin: either the
word is adjusted to some model of the Russian language, so to speak, is Russified
grammatically (if we are talking about Russian), or regardless of the original form
it is accepted as non-declinable, i.e. it is used in the nominative case throughout
the text.
9. Speak on the strategies of rendering culture-biased vocabulary (suggested
by R. Leppihalme). – Leppihalme thoughts that translation strategies can be
conditionally divided into two large groups: global and local.
10. Speak on Pedersen’s strategies for rendering extralinguistic culture-
bound references. – Pedersen offers 7 strategies for rendering extralinguistic
culture-bound references: official equivalent strategy, retention; specification;
direct translation; generalization; substitution; omission.
11. Speak on Kolechko’s ways of rendering culture-bound vocabulary.–
According to Kolechko, the culture-bound vocabulary can be rending with the help
of functional replacement and omission.
12. Speak on Karamitroglou’s ways of rendering cultural references. –
According to Karamitroglou, there are five possible alternatives for such a
transfer: a) cultural transfer, b) transposition, c) transposition with explanation,
d) neutralisation (plain explanation), e) omission.
13. Speak on Ramiere’s classification for procedures which are applied in
translating cultural loaded words. – borrowing; calque; gloss; omission;
neutralization; cultural substitution.
14. Speak on Tomaszkievicz’s eight strategies in film subtitling. – omission,
literal translation, borrowing, equivalence, adaptation, replacement of the cultural
term with deictics, generalization, explication.
15. Speak on Bastin’s procedures of adaptation. – transcription of the
original, omission, expansion, exoticism, updating, situational or cultural
adequacy, creation.
16. What does the choice of culture references translation strategies depend
on? [– The choice of the path depends on several prerequisites: on the nature of
the text; on the significance of the reality in the context; on the nature of the
reality itself, its place in the lexical systems of the source language and the
translation language; on the language’s word-formation capabilities, literary and
linguistic tradition; on the readers of the translation (compared with the reader of
the original)
17. Speak on the role of visualization in realias translation. – Visualization
supports the linguistic module, by itself not explaining the phenomenon. Therefore,
when visualizing reality at a time that does not coincide with the appearance of
information about it in oral speech, the choice of translation reception was
influenced by time constraints and the number of characters placed on the screen.
