Necropsy Lab October 2021

• Examine a deceased catfish externally by observing the conditions of the skin, eyes, fins, gills, and mouth in order
to document healthy catfish.
• Analyzed the inside organs of the catfish such as the stomach, intestines, and liver by carefully and correctly
cutting an incision on the underside of the catfish.
• Familiarized with the internal organs of a catfish by identifying certain organs in the body.
• Operated and extracted the stomach and intestines of the catfish to preserve for future research.
• Observed heart cavity procedure to identify the heart conditions of the catfish.
• Inspected both liquid and dried jarred specimens including fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals in order to
analyze and observe.

Bird-banding Workshop October 2021


LSU Workshop put on by Graduate Students, Baton Rouge, LA
• Examined birds by their feathers and unique features in order to identify age, sex, and species of the birds.
• Demonstrated how to properly age a bird using the Wolfe-Ryder-Pyle (WRP) age classification to aid in research
and recognize contrasting birds.
• Comprehended how to safely and correctly band birds by using bird banding pliers and leg gauges to keep track
on individual birds and gather data.
• Assembled and disassembled a mist net step-by-step in order to appropriately set up mist nets in the future at
other bird-banding sights and events.
• Demonstrated safely hold a song bird by using the Bander’s Grip to assist with releasing the captured and banded
birds.
• Observed careful extractions of numerous song birds out of mist nets to aid in future mist net captures.
• Charted research about banded birds to better understand how to identify sex, age, and bird species.
