DIRECTIONS: Answer the following questions.

1) As a Deck Officer, Why do we need to have a basic knowledge of the Engine Propulsion

system? (5pts)

Duty officers need to be fully aware and conversant with various bridge control
systems and use of main engine. This is know how is essential in order to deal with
emergency or critical manoeuvre wherein a thorough understanding of various alarms and
indicators is required. Check communication system, the first and the foremost important
thing before using main engine is the communication between the bridge and the engine
control room or the local manoeuvring platform. Clear the propeller, before trying out or
operating main engine it must be ensured that the propeller is clear of any nets, fishing
lines, ropes, trawls or any other unwanted objects. Make sure engines are tried from ECR
before taking over, it is very important to ensure that the propulsion plant is in good
condition so that no trouble is faced when the engine is running during manoeuvring. It is
also important for the deck officer to Use Program bypass for instant reduction or
acceleration, Control acceleration of main engine gradually when telegraph put into nav full,
to know manual emergency shutdown, and to know the automatic emergency shutdown
operates irrespective of control position.

2) As a Deck Officer, How can we help the Engine department to maintain the good
operation of the engine? (5pts)

There are some situation wherein engine and deck officers must maintain efficient
communication. I think one of the most common ad important operations wherein the deck
and engine departments come together is on the ship’s maneuvering. In order to ensure the
safety of the ship, it is important that officers and crew members from each department
must maintain healthy communication not only during emergency situations but throughout
all important ship operations. Deck department should cooperate on engine department
when they are in a situation of Engine room machinery abnormality, fire on ship, when there
are fog, traffic or manned situation, heavy smoke/ spark from the funnel, internal oil transfer
operation, pumping operation, and deck machinery operation.
