Taft Avenue Station

1) Taft Avenue is an example of an elevated station. It functions with unified system of

interdependent subsystems including the Building Structure, Electrical, Mechanical
and Plumbing. The Building Structure consists of the structural elements and
components that helps the building to be comfortably usable for railway passengers.
The Electrical subsystem consists of lightings and circuitries that helps the system
provide power to different subsystems that requires electricity to function. The
Mechanical subsystem consists of elevators, escalators and other mechanical
devices that helps set the motion of objects/occupants from one place in the system
to another. Plumbing subsystem consists of the proper distribution and collection of
water supply that will be consumed by railway personnels and passengers and how
will it be redistributed to the main water line.

Facilities/Features that needs improvement:

1) Based on my observation from yesterday’s inspection, one of the column on the
southmost part of station appears to be cracked and one corner of that column is
already spalled off. This problem may eventually progress into something worse
if not corrected, immediately.

2) If I am to design the station, how do I want it t be?

- If I would be designing the station, I would consider the possible use of air
conditioning within the paid/unpaid area of the station and the full enclosure of
the station. This will be costly in terms of electrical power, but it will
encourage more citizens to utilize railway transportation because they will feel
more comfortable in using the station and it will also somehow lessen the
burden of road transportation.
- Also, I would like to increase the number of working elevators/escalators so
we can cater more passengers using those mechanical devices. I believe one
of the factors that affects a passenger’s desire to board a train is the ease of
access to the platform area.
