Objective

 To introduce various types of flowmeters commonly found in industrial applications

 The principles of flow measurements and accuracies of each flowmeter

 To familiarize methods of flow measurement of an incompressible liquid.

2. three different types of flow meter

 Orifice Flow Meter Transmitter FT-503,
 Magnetic Flowmeter FT-502 and
 Coriolis Flowmeter FT-501.

3. Hand valves: used to select the flowmeter for measuring the water flow during the
experiment, which is collected in a calibration tank T-505.

4. volumetric flowrate over time is checked against the volumetric scale on the
calibration tank : to compare the accuracy of each type of flowmeter.

5. Flow measurement and accuracy check:

a) Integral orifice meter vs calibration tank (volumetric flowmeters - volumetric flow meters
got their name because these flow meters measure the fluid volume passing through a specific
location in a set period of time. Volumetric flow meters provide an instantaneous analog,
digital, or pulse output of the volumetric flow rate of the liquid or gas)
b) Magnetic flowmeter vs calibration tank
c) Coriolis flowmeter vs calibration tank (mass flowmeter) Mass flow meters measure the fluid
mass flow rate that travels through a tube per unit of time.

6. Function of flowmeter: A flow meter (or flow sensor) is an instrument used to

measure linear, nonlinear, mass or volumetric flow rate of a liquid or a gas.

Flow meter accuracy is how close the measurement is to the true value

A flow meter is a device that measures the flow rate of a fluid. Flow meters are flow
measuring instruments used to measure the linear, nonlinear, mass, or volumetric flow
rate of a gas or a liquid.

Accurate flow measurements of gases and liquids are required for the better control and
quality of industrial processes.

Magnetic flowmeters measure the velocity of conductive liquids in pipes, such

as water, acids, caustic, and slurries

An Orifice Meter is basically a type of flow meter used to measure the rate of flow
of Liquid or Gas, especially Steam, using the Differential Pressure Measurement
principle. It is mainly used for robust applications as it is known for its durability and
is very economical.

A Coriolis flow meter measures mass by the inertia of a liquid or gas flowing

through a vibrating tube that is equipped with a set of sensors at the inlets and
outlets of the meter. The increased movement of the flow produces measurable
oscillation that is proportional to the mass.
