JOHONE MAY D.

VICTORIANO
NLAM (CTSE 3: The Nurse Manager)
1. What style of leadership seemed to be preferred by Nurse XY's manager?
- Nurse XY’s manager presented an authoritarian leadership style or autocratic
leadership because he is characterized by the control of all decisions and little input
from group members. Autocratic leaders typically make choices based on their ideas
and judgments and rarely accept advice from someone else.

2. What theory of management seemed to be showed by Nurse XY's manager?

- Autocratic leaders typically make choices based on their ideas and judgments and
rarely accept advice from someone else.

3. What style of leadership and theory of management were preferred by Nurse XY?
- The type of leadership and theory management that Nurse XY preferred was
democratic where the employees input is also appreciated. He did also give the
manager options to take into considerations.

4. Who do you think was right, Nurse XY or the nurse manager? Why?
- I think the nurse manager was right because how could he have known that it was
going to be Nurse XY’s son’s birthday. He should have notified the nurse manager in
advance of the special day. If he had told him, I am sure he would’ve understood.

5. In that situation, what do you think are the qualities of an effective leader the
nurse manager displayed? Why?
- The quality that the leader showed was the ability to delegate. The leader knows the
skill and strength of nurse XY. That's why the manager assigned nurse XY to be the on-
call nurse.

6. What do you think are the qualities of an effective leader the nurse manager did
not display? Why?
- The leader did not show emotional intelligence because of the manager's anger; he
spoke words that resulted in the decision of nurse XY to discontinue his employment in
the institution. Another quality is the strong communicator quality, and if the manager
did understand what nurse XY feels, the manager could have used proper words to
convince nurse XY to report on that day.

7. In that situation, in what ways has Nurse XY been an effective follower? Why?
-
8. In what ways has Nurse XY not been so effective as a follower? Why?
- He did not inform his manager ahead of time and did not develop a plan b in order to
avoid crisis and emergencies.
9. If you were Nurse XY, what would you have done and why?
- If I were Nurse XY, what I would have done is that maybe even two weeks or so before,
if I knew my daughter’s birthday was on such day, I should have requested off. Also, I

would not be volunteering to work on-call because of the risk of them calling that day
special to my family and me. I should also always have a plan B to avoid crisis and
emergencies, Because even if Nurse XY was asked to come for duty forcefully and in a
threatening way, he would never give a productive output at work.

10. If you were the nurse manager, what would you have done and why?
- If I were the nurse manager, I would have called someone else and see if they wanted
to work; if not I would have called Nurse XY back and let him know no one else was
available to work and that he had to come in
