Three J.J. Johnson Phrases
Three J.J. Johnson Phrases
There is so much to learn from J. J.'s playing, and transcribing his solos is a great way to
develop your own jazz language.
Here I have selected three of his phrases - I suggest memorizing them as quickly as possible
and use the sheet music as a way to get started (or to be reminded).
I have written out suggestions for slide positions, try them out and see what you think!
Some of them might seem awkward at rst, but alternative positions are so useful.
The phrases don't have articulations written out. If you're new to reading jazz, the phrases
are meant to played like this:
If no articulation is written out, you play eight notes legato and quarter notes short.
Feel free to play the phrases in any order you like (start in your most comfortable register)
and at your own pace. Good luck! /Daniel
