Ethics and Professional Conduct (IMA104) Group Discussion Assignment – Page 1 of 4

INSTRUCTIONS

Students will be divided into four (4) separate groups. Each group will be marked as a single
group, not by its individual members. Therefore, it is very important that group members
communicate to each other.

Each group will prepare an oral presentation based on specific sections of the ICCRC Code of
Professional Ethics. Each group will present one of the following:

1. Group One – Articles 1-4

2. Group Two – Articles 5-8
3. Group Three – Articles 9-11
4. Group Four – Articles 12-15

Every person in each group must participate in the presentation. All components of the
presentation must be divided amongst the members of the group. Group members will decide
who will present which materials.

Presentations must last at least 20 minutes but no more than 25 minutes. Groups will be stopped
at the 25 minute mark. Individual group members may use cards/notes. Groups must only use
their notes as a guide, not as a crutch. If anyone is observed reading their notes 75% of the time
or more, the entire group will lose 30 marks from the entire assignment mark – no exceptions.

Oral presentations must possess the following components:

 A clear topic of discussion
 A topic sentence
 A title
 Select one of the following strategies to begin your presentation:
o tell a story or an anecdote
o read a quotation
o use a gimmick
o reveal an interesting fact
o relate a fact about a subject
 When you introduce your topic, provide your audience with an oral outline of the main
points you will be covering. Make sure that these points are then covered
 Include research that effectively helps you present your point of view
 Your research should include either statistics or a direct quotation. You must tell the
audience where this information came from and you must visibly display it to your
audience as a handout, written on the board, etc
 Any other points you rely on should be properly cited in your presentation
 When you conclude your presentation, make sure to:
o restate your main topic
o summarize your main points
o end with whatever method you used to begin (i.e. anecdote, quotation, gimmick,
interesting fact, or new fact)
o leave the audience with a challenge

o set an example for the audience to follow

 Be prepared to answer questions

You will be marked on all the above, as well as how you presented and the following:
 whether you made eye contact
 your facial expression
 your gestures and posture
 whether you could be heard or not
 whether you spoke too quickly or not

At the end of your presentation, please provide your speaking notes or cards to be evaluated.
These notes/ cards should provide an outline that tells your instructor the following:
 your topic and title
 the method you chose to begin your presentation
 the main points you will be covering
 any citations you have relied upon
