Apply What You Know – Answers (page 26)
18. In a business, managers run the show, they are the ones who make things happen and
observe projects, jobs, and employees.
19. The management function that directly affects the daily work of employees the most is
organizing. The organizing function is concerned with determining how plans will be
accomplished most effectively and the resources needed to accomplish those tasks. It
may be difficult for an employee to find the resources needed to accomplish a project.
20. The major difference between the classical theory of management and the
administrative theory of management is classical management looks at the way work is
organized and completed while administrative management looks more at the effective
practices for how businesses are organized.
21. The changing diversity in the U.S. workforce will affect the characteristics of managers in
the future by bringing new and interesting ideas to business due to the increase of
younger workers joining the workforce.
22. Some ways to prepare for management careers in the future is to focus on the five
management functions: planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling. Another
thing to do is to stay dedicated to one’s company to show that they want the position
and are ready for the next step in their career.
Case In Point ~ Thinking Critically ~ Answers (page 27)
1. I agree with Ambers statement that a manager’s job entails more than just making sure
work gets done or working with employees. I disagree with Travis’s statements about
how a manager’s job is easy and his statement about you are a good manager or you are
not. Everybody has to start somewhere and training is an option to become a better,
more experienced manager.
2. I do not think managers spend most of their time working with employees. Although it is
known that managers work frequently with employees, there is a lot of behind the
scenes work managers do in order to keep a business running smoothly. Some examples
of behind the scenes work mangers do include working and communicating with other
businesses, making sure the businesses goals and deadlines are being met, and planning
and making decisions about what needs to be done.
3. Some common characteristics of manager’s jobs are communication, leadership, and
controlling. Different types of things that would be quite different from one manager’s
job to another would be the work and how it is completed, the employees they work
with, and how they decide to run the business they are managing.
4. If I were responsible for creating a training program for managers, I would include how
to communicate and collaborate with employees, how to lead, how to stay organized,
and how to execute work.
