Activity Title :Techniques in Separating Heterogeneous Mixtures Learning Target : identify the process and materials involved in sieving Reference(s) : SLM Science 6 Quarter 1 Module 2 https://www.google.com.ph/search?q=sieving+clipart&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwiP-sbAir LAS Writer : DINALYN T. ANDRADA/ VINYA D. FRANCISCO The process of separating mixtures which is composed of dry materials of different sizes is called sieving. The mixture is placed into the sieve which is continuously moved back and forth. The mixture will be separated into two components: fine and coarse particles. The particles which are coarse will be left in the sieve while the fine particle will pass through.
Read the short passage about sieving.
The object in the picture is a sieve. It is a shallow vessel
having holes at its bottom. This is generally used to separate coarse particles from fine particles. The size of the holes of the sieve to be used depends on the size of the particles of the materials to be separated from the mixture.
QUESTIONS: 1. How will you describe the components of the mixtures to be separated using sieving?
2. How does the sieve move when you use it?
3. What particles of the mixture pass through the sieve?
4. Why do some particles of the mixture stay in the sieve?
