Film Review

“Death note” is a japanese anime series that ran between 2003 and 2006. It was directed by Tetsurō
Araki, who followed the storyline of the original manga with the same name. We know it by one of the
most popular anime. After its release, it had won "Best TV Anime" award. It is part of the action and
psychological thriller genre implying the moral value of the character’s action.
The plot is following the story of Light Yagami, a genius disaffected highschooler, whose life took an
unexpected turn when he found a notebook which can kill anyone as long as the user knows both the
target's name and face. This book actually belongs to a shinigami named Ryuck. When he is visited by the
book's previous owner, he reveals his plans to the creature, who found them interesting and amusing.
Light starts with the intention of erasing all the bad people, making the world a better place. As criminals
around died from the same cause, mass media suspects that a single person is behind all of that. The
police has trouble catching the inculpat, so they turn to “L”, the best detective in the country. So, between
the two a difficult mental game starts , where eatch of them try to outsmart the other, a wore about whose
sense of justice is right.
While Death Note addresses a range of philosophical topics, spanning from property rights, to human
nature, one of the most interesting is Justice. Over time, the main character develops a serious God
complex, and a conception about “ends justify the mean”. At the other poll L only talks about justice as a
reaction to injustice. The show does not give us an explanation, but this makes it interesting. Like in the
real world, you can form your own opinion.
I really loved this series. I enjoyed everything about it, from characters , art work and plot, to the
ideas behind it. The story creates confusing but fascinating events that can catch your attention and
leaves you speechless. Even the typology of the characters differentiates from other cinematografic
works, making it hard to choose a favorite one. Even the theme song and art style will leave you
speechless.

REVIEW _______________________
To sum up, if you are fascinated by psychological
and thriller films, I recommend this one for sure.
Even if you are not looking for this type of genre,
you can try giving it a chance considering that it’s
built around different concepts and it integrates your
own perception. I can't wait to find out your opinion
(mainly about the ending)!
