Creating a Multimedia Presentation on

Financing Your First Car – Student Guide

Assignment Summary

In this assignment, you will conduct research to find the best loan for your first car. Using reference
materials and Internet sites, you will collect information for a used car and loan options to buy the car.
You will use an online loan calculator to find the best option for a used car loan. You will do a multimedia
presentation on the best loan option for a used car and the resources you used, along with the options
you explored to decide on the best loan option. A list of search term suggestions for finding resources is
provided at the end of this guide.

Your presentation should include the following slides. The slides should be a title slide, a slide containing
your used car information, a slide containing information on loan options with a bank and with a credit
union, a slide including calculations, a slide comparing the loan options, a slide with the best choice for a
car loan, and a works-cited slide.

Assignment Instructions
Step 1: Gather materials and necessary information.

a) You will collect information about a used car of your choice and a loan.

• Search for a used car you think you would like to buy someday using an Internet search
engine for “used cars for sale.” The car cannot be more than $15,000.

o Save a picture of the car.

o Record the price, mileage, year, make, model, and location of where to buy the
car.

• Search for loan options with a bank and a credit union of your choice. For both options
find.

o APR

o Restrictions on the loan options

o Additional fees

o Finance charges

o Repayment periods

b) Be sure to keep a list of your references so you can cite them later.

c) Ask your teacher where you should save your presentation as you work on it. Your teacher
may also have specific guidelines about the file name you should use.

Step 2: Create your title slide.

a) Begin by creating the title slide. This slide should include the title of your project (name of
your car), your name, your teacher’s name, and the due date of the presentation.

b) Remember to save your work as you go.

Step 3: Identify your choice for a used car.

a) Create a slide titled My First Car.


b) On this slide, include:

• Picture of your chosen car

• Description of your car, including year, make, and model

• Price of the car

• Mileage of the car

• Location of where to buy the car

• Reason you selected the car

• Prediction of the income you think you would need to obtain a loan to get the car

• Prediction of the monthly payment you will feel comfortable paying

Step 5: Identify options for a used car loan through a credit union.

a) Create a slide titled My Credit Union Options.

b) On this slide, include information about the credit union:

• Other credit unions you researched

• Reasons you picked this credit union

• Picture of the credit union or its logo

Step 6: Calculate the options.

a) Create a slide titled My Calculations.

b) On this slide, use an online calculator to find:

• 3-, 4-, and 5-year monthly payments with at least two different down payments. (The
down payment cannot be more than $1000.00.) Include:

o the correct sales tax.

o fees from the dealer and loan provider.

o the total amount of the loan including tax and fees.

o the total interest to be paid over the repayment period.

• Picture of the amortization table for one of the monthly payment plans above. Use the link
under loan calculator resources. What patterns do you see in the table?

c) Pick a down payment for your loan. Insert the down payment into the title of the table.

d) Compare and contrast all the options and predict why someone would pick each of the
options.

Step 8: Choosing your loan.

a) Create a slide titled My Best Option.

b) On this slide, add information about the best loan option for your car:

• Which financial institution and loan option are you going to use?

• List the reasons you selected that option.

• Reflect if your prediction of the income needed and the monthly payment to buy your first
car was correct.

• List the reasons you think this car would be a good buy.

• Add reflection comments about what you learned from this project.

Step 9: Cite your sources.


a) Create a slide titled Works Cited.

b) On this slide, create a list of the resources you used to complete your research. A simple list
of website titles and addresses (URLs) is acceptable. If you used print sources, list the title,
author, publisher, city, and date.

Step 10: Evaluate your work using this guide and the rubric.
a) Make sure you have used spellcheck and saved your document correctly.

b) Grade yourself by going through the provided rubric.

c) Discuss with another student and go over each other’s presentations to make sure you both
have done a good job. Talk about what you can do to improve your presentations.

Step 11: Revise and submit your presentation.
a) If you were unable to check off all the requirements on this student guide, revise your
presentation with the help of the improvement suggestions you obtained and save it before
submitting.

b) When you have completed your presentation, return to the virtual classroom and use the
“Browse for file” option to locate and submit your assignment. Congratulations! You have
created your first-car-loan presentation.
