Gravity Exploration Name ________________________

Part A: How much would you weigh on other planets and the moon?
The more mass a planet has, the more gravity it has. Planets which have more mass than Earth would
have more gravity than Earth. A person would weigh more on these planets than they do on Earth.

Use a weight of 125 pounds for all calculations.

Location Weight on Gravity Calculated
Earth Weight
Moon 125 X 0.17 = 21.25
Mercury 125 X 0.38 = 47.5
Venus 125 X 0.86 = 107.5
Mars 125 X 0.38 = 47.5
Jupiter 125 X 2.87 = 358.75

Part B: How far could you jump on other planets and the moon?
Determine how far you can jump on the Earth. To do this, place a piece of tape on the floor as a
o

starting line. Jump as far as you can off of both feet. Have your partner mark where you land not where you
end up! Measure the distance and record in the table. Do this five times, then find the average.

Conclusion:

1. Complete each statement:

A person would weigh more on Earth than on the Moon, because they’re less gravity to push you down on
the moon.

A person could jump further on Earth than on Saturn, because there is more gravity on Saturn making you
feel heavier .

The force of gravity between two objects depends on mass and distance.

2. Create three questions that could be answered after doing this lab activity. Be sure to include the
answers!
