BEST PRACTICES IN TEACHING ENGLISH 8

S.Y. 2019-2020

“I shall participate, I shall contribute, and in so doing, I will be the Gainer”- Walter
Annenberg

There are some reasons why students preferred not to speak up during
class discussions or raise their hand when they have questions especially in
English class. For some students, it’s because they are shy, feel nervous, less
smart or afraid that they might get the wrong answer and their classmates will
laugh and judge them for it.

Because of this, many students think that keeping quiet and listening to
the teacher during class discussion is the best decision. But participating in
class is an important part of developing communication skills and understanding
the lesson. Because communication skills are very important when he or she will
have to discuss ideas and collaborate with others . It also improves student’s
comprehension. The more they participate in class, the more they will develop
these skills.

It takes time and practice, but there are some best practices in making the
students speak up during class discussion in English 8. These practices aim to:
Promote active participation among students
Develop student’s communication skills

1. RECITATION CHIP
Students were given a Chips every time they raise their hands to speak and
participate. Once they receive one, a words like Very Good (5 points) and Cool
Effort (3 points) indicates on the chips. At the end of the class, they post the
chips on the chart for them to view and be aware of the number of chips they
already have. This encourages the students to be active in the classroom and
makes the students have the chance to speak English. These students also tend
to score higher in class participation.
2. DELIVER A SPEECH
The students transfer their learning in each quarter by composing and
delivering brief and creative speeches featuring a variety of effective
paragraphs, appropriate grammatical signals or expressions in topic development
and appropriate prosodic-features, stance and behavior.
So, students from each section were instructed to deliver a self-composed
informative speech (First Quarter), Entertainment Speech (Second Quarter),
Persuasive Speech (Third Quarter) and Declamation for the last quarter . They
were given enough time to memorize the speech and it was a moment of self-
confident exposure in front of their fellow students. The objective of this
activity is to develop the communication skills of the students and to gain self-
confidence. Students who delivered their speeches overcame their shyness .
