AMERICAN HISTORY 2

American History

In what ways did American colonists attempt to imitate British society in the 18th century?

The American colonists attempted to intimidate the British society by protests claiming

that the imposed taxes did not abide by the British citizens rights, boycotting to purchase any

commodity from the British, and wearing clothes that resembled Indians, then sneak into the

harbor ships, as well as throwing to the water the imported tea. By 1770, the Great Britain had

managed to set up various colonies within North America (Murrin et al. 2011). Almost all of

American colonists were in the notion of being Great Britain citizens. Their bond came from

trade activities and governance. Trade had been restricted thus the colonies relied on Britain for

importation of supplies and goods. No banks existed and the money available was les, so the

colonists used to trade credit and barter for their essentials.
ou urc
Following the Indian and French war, the Britain colonists decided that they need to gain

control of the western territories. A 1763 Proclamation was issued by the king restricting

settlements being established in the Appalachian Mountains (Murrin et al. 2011). Most of the
vi y re

colonists who had settles already were ordered to go back to the east side. In 1765, the
ed d

Quartering Act was passed by the parliament noting that the colonists necessitated to find
ar stu

payment for the British soldiers that were in American soil. Since the Indian and French war had

come to an end, they did not see any need for the soldiers being stationed within the colonies.

Also, the Britain needed a lot of money so that they could settle its debtors of the war.
Th

The parliament and the king had the idea of taxing the colonies. Thus they resolved into finding
sh

the types of taxes to impose on the colonies to pay the debtors of the Indian and French war

(Murrin et al. 2011). Such taxes included the 1765 Stamp Act that necessitated using a

specialized paper that bears tax stamp embossed for all of the legal documents. The other laws

included 1767 Townsend Acts which required colonies to pay taxes for the importing

commodities such as tea.

Most of the colonies felt like they do not have to pay the taxes due to the laws being

passed by the parliament of England instead of their colonial governments. Their were protests

claiming that the imposed taxes did not abide by the British citizens rights (Murrin et al. 2011).

Then the colonies decided to resist through boycotting to purchase any commodity from the

British. In other colonies such as Boston, the Massachusetts started demonstrating their

frustrations through wearing clothes that resembled Indians, then sneak into the harbor ships, as

well as throwing to the water the imported tea. This act they were demonstrating was referred to

as “Boston Tea Party”. The action of the British was to close down the port of Boston. However,

they proceeded to hold the party in 1774 in Yorktown, Virginia. In 1774, the Congress of the
ou urc
continents decided to meet and launch complaints regarding the manner in which the colonies are

being treated by the Britain. Most of the Americans were in the idea that their concerns were

being neglected and thus they were unhappy. In 1775 April, there was a group of colonial
vi y re

soldiers that fought against the army of Britain in the Concord and Lexington battles. The second
ed d

congress for the continents was formed consisting of army from the 13 colonies and selected

George Washington as the Commander-in-Chief for the army. And as such the colonies became

ready to fight for their rights.
