Introduction
It's important to understand how breeding works before you begin building
your dream-team. Each pokemon has six stats: Health, Attack, Defense, Special
Attack, Special Defense and Speed. These stats are determined by two values: a
base stat value, which is specific to the Pokemon’s species, and an individual value
(IV), which can vary on any Pokemon. An IV value can range from 0-31, 31 meaning
that your Pokemon will have 31 extra points higher than the base value allows, at
level 100.
You can see your Pokemon’s base stats and IVs with the Stat Scanner key item that
is obtainable from a scientist in Prof. Log’s Lab at Frozen Heights.
Individual Values
So, how does one achieve that via breeding? Well, any given offspring will inherit 3
of the IV values out of the combined 12 that its parent’s possess.
In the case of Child1, we can see that it inherited its Defense stat from either
its Father or Mother, its Special Attack stat from its father and its Special Defense
stat from its mother. We can deduce this since Child1’s HP, Attack, and Speed stats
do not match either its Father’s or Mother’s stats. Therefore, we can tell that those
are the stats that were not inherited.
In the case of Child2, we can see that it inherited its Attack, Special Attack,
and Special Defense stats from its Mother only.
However, this is only the beginning of inheriting IVs. The Destiny Knot is a
held item that enables your offspring to inherit 5 different IVs from the pool of 12.
This drastically increases your chances for a near-perfect offspring. It can be
obtained at the Dehara Game Corner for 500 coins at the earliest. Giving the knot to
either parent will allow their offspring to inherit 5 IVs.
In the case of Child3(destiny)knot, we can see that all stats except for Special
Attack were inherited from its parents.
Obtaining wild Pokemon with good individual values can be a gambit, seeing
that getting any stat with an IV value of 31 is a 1/32 chance roll (0 is included as an
IV value). Because this is the case, we can use the Dexnav. The Dexnav is
obtainable from Nat Log on the second floor of the centermost house in Blizzard City.
For more information about how the DexNav works, consult the male scientist in the
same room you get the Dexnav. With enough search level, you can begin to find
dexnav encounters with stars in the scan.
If the stars show gold in the scan, that means that the scanned Pokemon will
have a number of guaranteed perfect (31) IV stat, equal to how many stars are
gold, up to three different stats. The remaining three stats that are not guaranteed to
be perfect can still have a value of 31, but getting those odds simply fall back to the
1/32 chance per stat. When a Pokemon has a perfect individual value, the common
way to describe this Pokemon is “X”IV, where X is the number of perfect IVs. In the
case of this Happiny, it would be referred to as a 3IV Happiny.
Natures
Another important trait that Pokemon possess is a Nature. A Nature (with the
exception of a handful few) adds a solid 10% permanent increase to one of your
Pokemon's stats while subtracting it from another. For example, an Adamant nature
adds +10% to your Pokemon's Attack, while removing the same percentage from
Special Attack. To know what natures boost/reduce what stat, any Pokemon
database website will have a chart on this subject.
Getting yourself a box full of “Synchronizers,” each with a different nature will
allow you to get any nature for any wild/static encounters you want. However, getting
this box full of Synchronizers can be somewhat challenging. You can simply just
search for the Pokemon with Synchronize in the wild, catch them and see if they
have a nature you don’t already have. This process can be circumvented with the
use of the Dexnav, similar to the process shown above.
Dexnaving Synchronizers
In this video, I will be catching Ralts on Route 4 just outside of Cinder
Volcano, so first, go find yourself a Ralts on Route 4 and be sure to catch it. Catching
a Pokemon is necessary to make dexnav spawns more consistent. After you’ve
caught a Ralts, start building Search Levels for Ralts by scanning for Ralts,
encountering them and then killing/catching them. Doing this will begin to give you
more information about the Ralts you scan in the future. In the video provided, my
starting Search Level is 20, which isn’t a lot but it isn’t zero.
With this nonzero search level, we can simply press R and B, which initiates
and stops the scan until we find a Ralts with Synchronize. Nicknaming them the
name of their nature is simply for organizational purposes.
If you don’t want to use dexnav to get Synchronizers, then simply breed them.
Catch a male and female Ralts (or other Synchronize mon) and continually breed
them until you get the desired natures from the new eggs. Make sure your female
parent has Synchronize itself so the eggs hatched will have a higher chance to have
Synchronize. Offspring Ralts can still end up with Trace even if the mother has
Synchronize. We’re just trying to increase our odds as much as possible.
Now that you have your Synchronizers with the desired natures, you can now
put them in the first slot of your party and begin catching the Pokemon you want to
breed without worrying about what nature the wild encounters will have. However,
how will we pass these natures down to future offspring? With an everstone. You can
steal these rocks from wild Roggenrola or Geodude and both can be found in the
KBT Expressway (and other caves). Giving the everstone to the parent Pokemon
with the nature you want will guarantee the nature to be passed down.
Abilities
The last thing you need to look after when creating your perfect Pokemon is
its ability. Taken from the related wiki article, “From Generation VI onward, a
female Pokémon has an 80% (60% for Hidden Ability) chance to pass down its
Ability slot, regardless of whether it is bred with a male Pokémon or Ditto.
Since Generation VI, it is possible for male and genderless Pokémon to pass
down their Ability if bred with a Ditto, in which case it has a 60% chance to
pass down its Hidden Ability.”
That also largely applies to Unbound. How does one obtain a parent with a
Hidden Ability you may ask? If the Pokemon is encounterable in the wild in any
capacity, whether it’s grass, fishing or surfing, you can use the Dexnav to get its
hidden ability. As seen in the Dexnaving Synchronizers video above, having a
nonzero search level will allow you to see the ability of the scanned encounter. With
this search level, there is a chance for its ability to be its hidden ability. If you’ve
caught the Pokemon you’re scanning for, you can see what its hidden ability is right
in the dexnav register screen.
If the Pokemon is not encounterable in the wild, then you’re going to have to
go through a bit of decision making to get its hidden ability. The item Dream Mist, is a
usable item that can immediately force change a Pokemon’s ability to its hidden
ability. However, before challenging the Elite Four, this item is finite, as only two are
able to be found. One is gifted to you in Tarmigan Town by a scientist in front of the
Dream Lab during the daytime. The other is a reward for completing the mission
“Odd Odd Docks'' in Antisis City. Since this item is finite before beating the Elite Four,
you should make the most confident decisions on Pokemon that you can’t encounter
in the wild, but you do want their hidden ability. In the postgame, Dream Mists are no
longer finite as you can get them from trading in Oddishes at Mirskle’s hideout or
buying them at the Battle Frontier for BP.
There is also a Clown NPC in the Battle Circus tent that allows you to
interchange a Pokemon’s ability without the use of an item. This is important if you
want to change a Pokemon’s ability from its hidden ability back to a regular ability,
since this is the only method of doing so. The Clown can also change a Pokemon’s
ability interchangeably between its first and second ability (same function as the
Ability Capsule, also obtainable at the Frontier for BP). All of this of course will cost
you BP.
Egg Moves
Eggs moves are moves that are usually not obtainable from a Pokemon’s
regular learnset, TM compatibility or from move tutors. Egg moves are unique to
every Pokemon species, so each Pokemon that can be bred will have a different
variety of egg movies being capable of inheriting. To know what a Pokemon’s
possible egg moves are, refer to the egg moves doc.
To get egg moves on a desired offspring, there are two ways you can do this.
If the Pokemon being bred can be encountered in the wild, use the dexnav. The
process is pretty much the same as searching for IVs and hidden abilities, but
instead we’re focusing on the move that appears on the dexnav scan. That move will
always be the scanned Pokemon’s first move and with a nonzero search level, that
move can be randomly picked to be one of the Pokemon’s egg moves. For example,
let’s use the Ralts back at Route 4. At the level you encounter Ralts here, their
regular first move will be Hypnosis.
However, with enough search level and dexnav scans, you can begin to find
Ralts with their first move not being Hypnosis.
However, once you go into battle, you have to make sure that the Cubchoo
you’re catching is male, because we want to have our offspring Eggs to be Eevees.
If you do find female Cubchoos (example), then either rescan until you find a male
one with Yawn, or take the Cubchoo and breed it with a male compatible Pokemon
until you get a Cubchoo offspring that is male (to breed with our Mother Eevee)
Breeding our Mother Eevee with this Cubchoo will allow all of the Eevee offspring to
inherit Yawn from their Cubchoo father. We want to aim for a female Eevee with Yawn so we
can continue breeding it to get Wish further down the line.
Now that we have an Eevee with Yawn, we can do the same process for a Field
Pokemon with Wish. This process can be confusing to know where to look, but you can with
the egg move docs to see if there are any compatible Pokemon you can scan for in the wild.
If none apply or are not within your reach, then you can look for Pokemon that can learn the
desired egg move naturally and fits the egg group. For Wish, we can use Togedemaru. Make
sure you find a male one.
This final Eevee’s gender doesn’t quite matter because we’re done with egg moves.
Now, if we want to perfect this, then we will look towards breeding this Eevee to get a
preferred nature and with a lot of perfect IVs (Ditto).
Breeding In-Game
So, after all has been said and done, that still leaves a very glaring issue: how
does one obtain perfect parents to breed down their dream, all-powerful offspring?
There are multiple ways you could go about it. It gets easier the further you delve
into Unbound's world. You can “realistically” start this process at Route 5 because
Ditto is now encounterable there, but be warned that the process will be much slower
since you won’t have all of the necessary items at this stage.
I will explain how the process works granted that you decided to breed after
having arrived at Seaport, and then proceed to elaborate using that as a base to
introduce some advanced techniques for the more dedicated breeders who want a
perfect team as early as virtually possible. Let's break down the entire process and
talk about the prerequisites:
2) Obtain the Dexnav at Blizzard City. If possible, Dexnav yourself the Pokemon you
want to begin breeding (preferably with 3 perfect IVs, hidden ability if desired). It
goes without saying that you're going to use one of your Synchronizers to ensure
your future parent has the Nature you desire.
3) Catch a Pokemon with either Flame Body or Magma Armor as its ability. The
most popular is Talonflame (Fletchling/Fletchinder at Route 12 Day). If you aren’t up
to this point in the game, then Slugma at Cinder Volcano will suffice. We want this
because these abilities will reduce the amount of Egg Cycles you need to move to
hatch an egg in half. These abilities don’t stack with each other/themselves, so you
only need one in your party.
4) Hatch 50 eggs. Don't be intimidated by this. Find a pokemon with a fast hatch
cycle, like Magikarp, catch a male and a female one and start breeding. Afterwards
visit Pokemon Breeder's School at Seaport and talk to one of the male Pokemon
Breeders inside. He has three missions for you to complete.
The first, Flaming Body, for hatching 20 eggs, you will get the Baby Monitor,
which is a key item that just tells you how many eggs are being held by the Day Care
Man while you are breeding. It’s just something nice to have if you want to keep
track.
The second, Armoured Magma, for hatching 50 eggs, the breeder will give
you a 6IV Ditto. This is the Pokemon we’re after. Since this Ditto already has perfect
stats in every stat, breeding with the Destiny Knot will have your offspring inheriting
at least some of this Ditto’s IVs.
The third, Master Incubator, while optional, for hatching 100 eggs, you’re
gifted the Magma Stone. This key item will reduce the number of egg cycles needed
to hatch a Pokemon by half and this effect will stack with the effect Flame Body or
Magma Armor. Therefore, egg cycles will be quartered with both effects. While this
mission is optional, you will eventually hatch enough eggs to complete it so definitely
grab the Magma Stone once you’re able to.
5) Get an Everstone and Destiny Knot. Repeating from above, Everstones can be
stolen from wild Roggenrola or Geodude. Destiny Knot can be bought at the Dehara
Game Corner.
Now that we have a parent with its desired nature, ability, and egg moves, we
can now introduce our 6IV Ditto to it. Slap the Destiny Knot onto Ditto and the
Everstone onto the other day care and put them into the Daycare (Again, Route 5).
With all these preparations done, register your Motorbike and Baby Monitor
and Fly to Crater Town. Start biking up and down inside the KBT Expressway,
periodically checking the Baby Monitor, until it shows that your Pokemon had 5 Eggs
in total. Fly back to the Day Care, pick those eggs up and hatch them back at the
KBT. Chances are, one of the offspring will have a larger sum of perfect IVs
compared to the non-Ditto parent. At that point, remove the parent from the Day
Care, move the Everstone from the parent to the offspring, deposit the offspring in its
place, box (or release, if you have no soul) the parent and go back to biking.
Eventually, you’ll reach a point where you'll have a 4IV parent deposited
alongside your 6IV Ditto. From that point, all you can do is keep repeating the same
process until you finally get yourself an offspring with 5 perfect IVs. In most cases,
that should be more than enough, since the largest chunk of Pokemon need only
one of their two offensive stats to be perfect. Thus, what you should be aiming for is
an offspring with the offensive stat that they do not utilize to be the only non perfect
stat. As such, whenever you replace the current parent with an offspring, make sure
that their lacking offensive stat isn't a perfect IV stat, as if it is, there would be more
eggs needing to be hatched to avoid having that stat being inherited.
If you really need to use a Mixed Attacker (a pokemon with both Physical and
Special moves, utilizing both of its offensive stats), you have three options:
1) Bottlecap the last stat (more information on how to get these and where to use
them inside the Discord Unbound Server).
2) Keep breeding until your offspring randomly has both attacking stats as perfect
(usually results in a 6IV offspring, assuming all the other stats are perfect).
3) Settle for an imperfect, yet high enough IV value for the sixth stat. B+ to A+ will
usually suffice for general use.
Happy breeding :)
