False 1. In Logic, all mental processes are considered thinking.
False 2. The study of logic is only for professionals.
True 3. Reasoning is formally valid if it conforms with the rule.
False 4. Logic’s first concern is validity.
True 5. Reasoning is usually in conformity with the laws and principles of logic.
II. Show your ability to reason out by answering the following questions.
1. What exactly are you doing when you are thinking?
When thinking, I basically start with the question, “What is it”. As I determine the thing that I’m thinking, it logically is followed by random thoughts like distinguishing its characteristics or going deeper according to the scope of its content. In that case, when thinking, it is required to be on a state of full, focused awareness.
2. Is man a natural born logician? Justify.
Since logic is a science and art of correct thinking, and is all about order and consistency, I believe that man is a natural-born logician. Mentioned are skills that can be developed that initially begin even if we’re still a baby. Example of this is when a baby is playing and pushes his toy away from him and doesn’t get it back unless his mom or dad gives the toy back. This kind of thinking of a baby can develop as time naturally passes by and be more complex once he starts schooling.
3. When do you say that an argument is correct or valid? Cite example.
We can say that an argument is valid when we accept the evidence of the premises as true and the conclusion as well. It is impossible that all the premises are true and the conclusion is false. For example, all cats can't taste sweet things, my pet can’t taste sugar, therefore, my pet is a cat.
4. When do you say that an argument is sound? Cite example.
We can say that an argument is sound when we begin with true premises and the conclusion must also be true. For example, all cats are mammals, Abyssinian is a cat, therefore, Abyssinian is a mammal. 5. Do you think that logic is an important subject? Why? Logic is a very important subject because we can use it in our daily lives. Correct thinking is essential since it helps us understand and evaluate other people’s arguments and put us to betterment of our own arguments. Through this, we can effectively find answers to all our inquiries, doubts, and questions. Also, this can be used on decision-making by simply reasoning or thinking logically based on factual data.
