COUNTLESS AND ACTIVE PARTICLES OF MATTER – ORGANIC COMPOUNDS

A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Grade 9 – Science
Grade 9 – Beryllium
February 22, 2019

I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:
a. explain what is organic compounds
b. create graphic organizer about the uses of some compounds
c. recognize the importance of organic compounds in our daily lives.

II. Learning Content

A. Topic: Organic Compounds: Are They Useful?
B. Reference: Science 9 - Learner’s Module, pp. 119-121
C. Materials: book, pictures, video, powerpoint presentation, manila
papers, markers

III. Teaching/ Learning Procedures

A. Routinary Activities
1. Prayer 4. Classroom Management
2. Energizer 5. Checking of Attendance
3. Greetings 6. Other matters

B. Review
The teacher will let the students illustrate the following compounds:
1. SO2
2. CaCl2
3. O3

C. Motivation
The students will watch a video about organic compounds. Then, the
teacher will ask question:
1. How will you describe organic compounds?

D. Presentation
Conduct an unlocking of difficulties and pre-activity.
1. Organic Compounds - are group of carbon-containing compounds.
Organic compounds contain carbon and hydrogen; other organic
compounds are combined with other elements namely oxygen,
nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur, and halogens (fluorine, chlorine,
bromine, and iodine)
E. Activity
The group will group the students into three (3). Each group will be
given a guide for their activity. They will identify the uses of the
following compounds given to them and they will write their outputs on
the manila paper. Then, the teacher will select two members each
group to present their outputs in class.

ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
Gasolin Ethanol Acetone LPG Kerosen Acetic
e e acid
Beverage
Uses Food
Antiseptic
Fuel
Cleaner

F. Analysis
1. What is organic compound?
2. What do you think are the characteristics of the materials which
give their uses?
3. Why do you think these kinds of organic compounds are very
important?

G. Abstraction
1. Organic compounds are molecules that are composed mostly of
carbon and hydrogen atoms. Organic molecules can also contain
other atoms such as oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, and halogens.
2. Also, ethyl alcohol, acetone, gasoline, napthalene, acetic acid,
vanillin, acetylene, and esters are just a few examples of many
useful organic compounds. These kinds of compounds are produced
by plants and animals.
3. Many organic compounds are formed because of the special
characteristics of the element carbon. Carbon atoms has four (4)
valence electrons that makes it to form four covalent bonds with
atoms of other elements and other carbon atoms.
4. Carbon atoms can also make many types of arrangements: single
bond, double bond, and triple bond.

H. Application
The teacher will show different examples of organic compounds that
we commonly used every day and ask the students what would be our
every day life if there will be no organic compounds that we can be
used.

IV. Evaluation/ Assessment

Essay:
1. What is organic compound?
2. How useful organic compounds in our daily lives?

V. Agreement
Research the uses of the following compounds:
1. Methane
2. Butane
3. Octane
4. Ethane
5. Ethyne
6. Propene
7. Propyne
