CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

“Attendance Management System” is software developed for maintaining the attendance of the

student on the daily basis in the collage. Here the staffs, who are handling the subjects, will be

responsible to mark the attendance of the students. Each staff will be given with a separate

username and password based on the subject they handle. An accurate report based on the

student attendance is generated here. This system will also help in evaluating attendance

eligibility criteria of a student. Report of the student’s attendance on weekly and monthly basis is

generated.(Sujatha et al., 2019)

This article describes the problem of managing the number of attendances or absences in the

academic environment, as well as proposing a system of record and control of these data. The

work supports the idea of a GPS based automated system over the day-to-day handwritten

attendance registries, in order to facilitates the process. The system comprises a timekeeping

system that will register every student in a database. The database itself will be managed by the

University, so that reports, either individual or collective, can be issued whenever they are

needed on both physical and electronic format.(Shinde & Raul, 2017)

The first attendance machine was exceptionally basic, the representative simply emboldening’s

the attendance paper or called timesheet into the machine, and the time will be imprinted on the

timesheet. Essentially, this attendance machine comprises of a manual card opening or gap to

embed the timesheet workers and simple clock demonstrating the present time. The time when

the workers embed the card into opening is the thing that will be imprinted on the timesheet. This

machine additionally has a few disadvantages.(Hiremath & Mirajkar, 2018)

1
The proposed system provides a solution to manual attendance taking problem. This attendance

system based on GPS for web/mobile phone is based on the concept of web services which is

also implemented as an android mobile application. This attendance system using geo-tag locates

your position and marked the student as present by comparing the generated coordinate of the

student location, if the coordinates are the same.

1.3 AIM OF THE STUDY

The main purpose of this work is to develop GPS web based/mobile application to enable

students mark attendance.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

 Eliminate duplicate data entry and errors in time and attendance entries.

 Eliminate paperwork and save time.

 Automatic calculation of attendance.

 To increase student academy performance.

 Eliminate impersonation or students marking on behalf of another student

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

In most educational institutions the attendance is taken manually. It is not only time consuming,

but it is also unsecure and unreliable and it can be lost, students can mark attendance for other

students in their absence. Some institutions use manual paper attendance sheets for attendance

while this will be difficult for teachers to keep track of the large number of students because by

2
using paper sheets, a student can help the other students or his/her friend to answer their names

even when the student may be absent or come late in class, so it is not reliable.

1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The scope of the project is limited to several processes: handling of student attendance,

managing student attendance, record student attendance for academy assessments. It will

generate the reports such as student record for attending school activities. The Android student

attendance management system is designed in such a way that makes it possible to access

through any android platform.

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

These reports would be used to create statistics and further help the growth of the academic

process correlated with students’ interest or attendance rate on certain classes. The proposed

system offers a quick alternative of the traditional attendance system and the process of marking

attendance is very much simplified.

1.6 DEFINITION OF TERMS

 Attendance: the action or state of going regularly to or being present at a place or event.

 Android: Android is a mobile operating system developed by Google, open-source

software and designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones

and tablets.

 Software: Software is a program that enables a computer to perform a specific task, as

opposed to the physical components of the system.

 Institutions: an organization founded for a religious, educational, professional, or social

purpose.

3
 Automatic- (of a device or process) working by itself with little or no direct human

control.
