We all know you can’t judge a book by its cover. But the fact is that if a cover isn’t inviting,
people aren’t going to open that book up to read what’s inside.

Humans are innately wired to make snap judgments based on appearance. In face-to-face
interactions, this might mean reading physical cues and expressions. On social media, a profile
picture represents our sole opportunity to make a strong visual first impression.

In my LinkedIn photo, I uploaded a photo that I know would make a good first impression
because it is simple, professional, and is from the shoulders and up.

I chose this background for LinkedIn profile because it illustrates that I am knowledgeable and a
bright thinker. It is also eye-catching but not too cluttered.

The last aspect of this photo is my major. When applying for a job, it is always beneficial to have
your major and university in your profile so that future employers can know if you suite the job
description.
Next is a photo of my “about me” section. In this section, I gave the viewers a taste of my
personality and how I ended up choosing my major. This is an effective biography because it
allows employers to get to know me through my profile.

The screenshot below is a post that I uploaded about an award that I received. It is always good
to post academic achievements so that you come off more credible when discussing
accomplishments in future interviews. Also, simply posting academic events that you attend
provides to employers that you are engaged in your academics and involved in the community as
well.
Below is the portion of my LinkedIn where I listed the courses I have taken, awards I received,
and languages that I speak. When applying for internships, having a list of courses that relate to
your degree allows for the interviewers to see your background knowledge and if you are
qualified for the job. In addition, employers like to hire individuals who are bilingual to broaden
their customer territory. Similar to posting about accomplishments, listing them out conveys that
you have achieved a lot and can make you stand out from competitors.

Lastly, always list work experience along with a job description. Just like accomplishments, the
more job experience one has, the better they look against competition. Even if one has little job
experience, mentioning the tasks performs shows competence and ability to complete work
duties efficiently.
