Fats and Lipids
Objective:
To identify the physical properties of fats and lipids
Materials:
Isopropyl alcohol, acetone, paint thinner, cooking oil, baby oil, glycerol (glycerine), muriatic acid (HCl),
small glasses, syringe/medicine dropper, oslo paper
Procedure:
A. Spotting Effect
1. On ¼ oslo paper, place on separate spots/corner a drop of the following: alcohol, cooking oil, baby oil,
paint thinner, acetone. Label each sample. Let the paper stand for 5 minutes and note which corner
leaves a translucent spot. Compare the results.

B. Solubility
1. Prepare 4 small glasses and place in each 10 ml of water, paint thinner, muriatic acid, isopropyl
alcohol, and acetone. Add 3 drops of cooking oil in each small glasses. Stir. Record the results.
